Who's a sportline boffin?
hi everyone!
i've just bought a black sportline, and was wondering if anyone knew how many of each colour were made??
i am told there were 450 made, and that the black ones are rare, but how rare are they…?????
also, what is the best product to use to protect the hood? it's a relatively new mohair piece…
A brief description of the Golf…
http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/3074/pict06988oi.jpg
It's a '91 J Mk1 sportline in black,
just over 71,000 miles,
3 owners from new (the guy i bought it off owned it for the past 5… and seems to be a car enthusiast having a lupo gti 'squatted' outside his flat on oz rims, along with a modded mk4 golf and a3),
FVWSH up to 3 years ago, when servicing was done privately,
Dry engine bay, all is good under there, good exhaust, new batt.,
none of the common problems (bulkhead holes, rusty fuel neck, busted roof etc etc)
Stupidly clean recaro interior!,
Electric roof (works well) with mohair hood (recently replaced),
Original leather hood cover!
Cat 1 Clifford alarm/immob.! I've never experienced security like it! It locks the car down if you sit in it wihtout the keys in for more than 30 secs! Crazy!
BBS wheels abit scuffed round the very outer rim (expected really), black centres are fantastic!
Big vented disc brake conversion (WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE STOPPING POWER, BUT THIS HAS RECTIFIED THAT PROBLEM!)
A few very slight imperfections here and there, but a unoticeable… even when it's stood still!

Mark,
Welcome to the rarest part of the Mk.I GTi owners club. There were 449 Sportline's sold in the U.K. 421 were of the red variety and only 28 black. I have the official numbers somewhere from VAG. I'll post them if I can find them.

Nice too see you have bought one with the mohair hood already replacing the original plastic hood, they make such a difference. Getting mine done as soon as funds allow. Nearly there, hopefully by these people http://www.carhood.com/index.html Looks to be about 200 notes for the hood, no idea how much they will charge for fitting it (nightmare job), probably the same again, unless anyone knows ?

where are you based?
i have the receipt from the mohair hood fitted to mine and it was fitted by a company called ''soft-tops'' based in knights hill, london.
the total cost inc. fitting and vat was 350.
i think you'll probs be paying that if not more for yours fitted.
well worth it tho! no cracks, seems, etc. love it!

Alright chaps!
I rescued my black sportline from ebay for a very good price!
see post here for pics of when I got it.
http://www.vwgolfmk1.o…=0&postorder=asc&start=10
Its needed a fair bit of work but its looking good now. Had the seats out for a thorough clean up today, fixed the noisy starter motor yesterday and changed the fuel filter amongst other things.
Have got rid of the big bore since this pic was taken.
Not sure about the rareness myself as there seem to be a fair few for sale lately. Havent got a clue on numbers but there are 12 black on the cabrio register and 15 red.
Carhood Warehouse were doing a very good offer on fitted mohair hoods a couple of months ago, give them a call and see. My hoods vinal but in great condition.
Have you cars got Electric windows? and do they have the sportline steering wheel of do they have the normal type for later cabs but leather bound? I think a lot of sportlines came without electric windows. Mine has them but they look like they're aftermarket. And my steering wheel isn't the sportline one, have hardly seen any forsale that have one!

mine has manual windows all round.
electric hood.
not sure what the sportline steering wheel looks like, but i'm confident that mine's standard. it has a leather bound outer wheel with the usual mk1 'block' with horn in the middle.
i don't want a 'race' one. think they looks pants tbh!!!!!

I don't think the picture shown is the correct sportline steering wheel!
I think it is a three spoke black steering wheel with a thin (1cm) red line running across the bottom spoke at the bottom! I think the one in the picture is on a car from last jan or feb VW motoring article on sportlines and Rivages! It stated in the article that it was the owners personal choice and not the original! :?

Heres a pic…
Also just noticed this one has manual winders and the centre console has the blank cover where the power hood switch would normally be found! I know the power hood switch is sometimes located higher up on the dash on some foreign models though.

That'll explain it then! I have seen one on ebay before but can't remember actually seeing on on a UK car. I think most people think they should come with them. Buyers guides always seem to mention them and also electic windows as standard.that steerng wheel was made for sportlines in germany and other parts of europe.
Nice wheels Eyeletboy! 8)

eyeletboy.
make sure you get the piccies up when you 'deck' your sportline!
i'm slowly becoming more and more tempted, but it's wuite a hard ride anyway!
im thinkin fk highsports and bbs splits - 7's and 8's, with stretched tyres
let me know what i looks like when you do it!
saying that… it'll be a bastard to drive! rock hard and bumpy as f..k!

Mines lowered but I don't know how much by. Its not that low but I wouldn't probably go any lower as the sump already has a ding in it!
Good luck with it though! It will look awsome I'm sure 8)

mines lowered by 30mm at the moment.i'm thinking of useing the fk highsports and stretching the tyres but i'm still looking into it.i don't want to start messing around with the arches so i'll be going as low as the arches will let me.there was a sportline(red)at gti spring festival and it looked awesome.exactly how i want mine to look.as soon as my wheeels arrive i'll be sorting everything out so hopefully i'll have some pics up before the end of the month.
