What shall i do??? PLEASE HELP

Hi there golfy guys!!!!! I was looking for some help and i thought that this would be the right place to get it. REALLY REALLY impresses with this site! so much information! Fantastic  :notworthy:

So i have a few questions to ask you. I have seen a beautiful orange mk1 golf gti 1.8, and quite frankly i think im in love! such a cracking little car. But the problem is, the dang insurance man wont let me use all of that beautiful 1.8………..because im still young…..17 in april.

So what do you suggest i do??? Buy a seperate engine i.e a small polo engine (1.0L) and have a transplant so i can get it insured?

And also…..What shall i look for when buying this orange beast? What are golf mk1 gti's prone to be diseased by? Rust……Engine wear is high……? Anything like this i would love to know!

So if you can post your opinions on here I would be immensly happy. Or, alternatively, you can e-mail me at  carrigan.ross@gmail.com

Thank you soo much for your help guy……and gals!!

buying a GTI and replacing the engine is crazy mate!!..

buy a Mk1 Golf with a smaller engine and style it to look like a GTI, then when you got some no-claims bonus and driving experience under your belt, buy a GTI :D

if you decide to suck it up and shell out on the insurance then read this for what to look for when buying a GTI:

this has been done ( converting a gti to a 1.1) but in my eyes seems rather a lot of effort.
Save money - buy a 1.1 in decent condition (cheeper than a GTI)
uprate the brakes, interior etc to GTI from a breakers
Put the black arches on ( these were an option from vag so you dont even need to declare these to the insurance company)
Drive around, look cool, build up NCB and buy a GTI when your 19 and mr insurance man will quote you!
You could always buy a GTI to restore while you drive your other car and with a bit of luck it will be ready when you can insure it

I'd have to agree it's a bit too much effort to get a GTI, swap the engine for a small block for a year or so.. then put the GTI engine back in…

not sure on what wiring would be involved and if you can run a small block using a GTI wiring loom  :dontknow: probably not easily

not sure if the 1600 GTI would be any cheaper.. but a mk1 is still a mk1! 1.1 or 1.8, still a great car

Keep your eyes posted in the forum for sale section and on the dreaded eBay plus all classifieds for a 1.1, 1.3 or even a 1.5/1.6 Carb.

I had a 1.6 Carb MK1 when I was 19 (some years ago now!) and whilst not the Gti I wanted it kept insurance way down and was still bags of fun to drive

all the above!

go for a small engined one, have some fun with it whist young and carefree  , then either change it for a higher model in a few years, or 'do a conversion'.

Dont bother with a large engined model(whether conversion or not) until a few years.   Get that NCB together.  I know a few lad that have done this, and had fantastic small engined mk1s until they can actually viably upgrade.

Insurance wont be any cheaper on a small lump car with a conversion, as it'll tend to increase to the ins group of the doner car. (or in my case, decrease ;) )

good luck finding whatever you decide to go for but my big piece of advice is this…

get insurance quotes BEFORE you go lok at any etc, see what they will charge you. Even if its just quick internet quotes. The reason I got my mk1 even though its had already been sold was that someone bought it for theyre 17yr old son without checking insurance.

thanks so much for the fast responce everyone. I have seen a mk1 gti golf in "mars red" (thanks MR_GTi   ) for 1100 quid starting bid on   ebay  . No one had put a bid in on it, so i contacted the owner just before the auction closed and said I was interested. So I think I could have found a real bargain! I have a budget of approximately 4000 pounds excluding insurance (thanks mum and dad. lol) How much do you think it would be for a specialiset to do an engine transplant approx. And does anybody have any idea where i can find a mk1 for sale? Be it any engine size! Im finding them very hard to come across!

Thank you again for all of your help you lot are giving and have given me.

You may want to ring the insurance company about this first before putting a 1.1 in a GTI. I know the engine is smaller but they will probably say it's modifed from the factory standard and charge more!!!!

Just a thought before spending cash, I saw a 1.6 driver for sale the other day and it went for ?350 and was very tidy and looks like a GTI :D

I'll echo the comments - don't downgrade a Gti as standard smaller engined Gti will be lower insurance PLUS a mint non Gti MK1 will be a lot less money than an average/good condition Gti a lot of the time.

Keep you eyes peeled for a non-Gti in good nick and you could end up with a real bargain
