The Golf E was the base model for the Asia-Pacific market, so don't expect many goodies.

I am not so sure it is a 1.7, it could be a 1.6 also. The 1.7 has engine code EN and produces 59 kW. The 1.6 has engine code EM and produces 55 kW. Ask the seller the engine code that should be in the documentation to check it.

Looks very clean to me, almost too clean so ask or check to see if it has been resprayed. Check the bodywork carefully for signs of rust or repair.

Didn't realise there was so many variants sold around the world. Where do you get your info from? Was the 1.7 engine a derivative of the 1.6/1.8 block and was it fitted in any euro VWs - maybe Passat?

The 1.7 engine is indeed derived from the 1.6 block but bored out to 79.5 mm with 86.4 mm stroke. It also used K-Jet injection. This engine was used for US and Canada to meet their stricter emissions so was also fitted with EGR and catalytic convertor. Hence my doubt it is in this NZ car. It was not used in Europe.
