MIG is the best choice IMO, I'd make sure it's MIG with Gas though as this shields the weld making it less splattery
good luck with it, want to see lots of pics of your work in the resto section
I learnt to weld up my Mk1 myself and found it really easy after the initial first weld to the car

Get a gas mig if your going to be welding in a garage or some where inside, if like me you have to work on your car in the open air then I would sugest you get a non gas mig, with a bit of practise you can still get teh same results, but its does take a bit more doing.
When I learnt to weld, I did an evening class that gave you an insight into all types of welding, but tbh once you know the basics then its just a case of practice. Get someone to show you how to do it a few times then practice as much as poss on scraps of metal. Car bodys are quite hard to do though as the metal is so thin and tends to melt if your not careful.
Heres a good site for tips etc with littel videos too… http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/

Practice makes perfect.
The last thing you want to do is start blowing holes in the chassis! Personally i prefer TIG welding, but MIG would be best in this case
