That hole is for the lower trim fixing which is slightly larger than the centre trim.

Good attempt.
Next time angle your nozzle and turn the wire speed up a little bit more.
It will also help if you grind/buff the carbon surface off the new steel first 8)

I like the little square of steel to the left of the main repair. Welding-up and the seemingly sound metal starts to pop-through as you're welding to it. Don't you just hate it when that happens ?!?
Looks like an inner sill end which means you're doing a proper resto !
Good luck with it !

Deffo inner sill on Passenger side (RHD) just infront of the rear wheel
It is thanks , for the welding tip's [ i must admitt i can't weld up hill !! ] .The jacking point is supposed to be where the 2nd small plate is despite the outer sill only having a small hole the inner 2 sections were gone [ rust ] on both sides of the car
Thinking about it though, any water that gets in to the sill rear section via the rear bumper mounting point at the back of the chassis leg will collect in here and rot it out . When i have primed all the inner sills i will be filling the chassis legs with waxoyl !!!

Nice welding on the inner sill Chudd, I wish I could weld as good as that. Did you drill out the spot welds on outer sill and spot weld?

The picture shows the rear part of the sill cut away to about 5 inch from the rear of the door , the rest of the sill is still on . What i intend to do is finish primering all the bare internal bits you can't see then fit the refurbished rear axle put the car on its wheels again then replace both outer sill skins safe in the knowledge that the inner part is sound and that nothing has sagged in the shell .
My Mk1 came off the road in August last year to do a quick repair to the rusty fuel filler neck . It nows has a new back panel [ thanks Crazyquiff] new rear chassis legs new rear axle mountings and loads of repair in the wheel well and arches .In fact the list goes on and on ..
Full repaint in 2 pack Mars red i will do in about March ready for the summer . I will keep you posted
