WATCH TOP GEAR TONIGHT!! SUNDAY 5TH DEC

Just watched Top Gear. I see VW's own car was on show again. What about the MK1 in the studio  Wrong colour grill badge, and I think the wrong wheels :?:

I taped it too… 8) 8O
Mk1 in the studio was odd, I'm sure I've seen that registration before somewhere. Could be right though, a pre campaign A-reg with 9 spokes would be ok. Badge was wrong as pointed out.
Would have been great to see lap times for all the mk's though!
Oh… and yet another appearance by the monstrous carbuncle that is VW's official Mk1. I hear that even Jeremy was able to list its excessive short comings. Amazing that VW doesn't take note. I thought the article was a bit heavy handed on the mk4, ok it's not great, but it was a hell of a lot better than the execrable mk3….
Looks like the Mk5 will be worth a test drive though, I'm going to go and get me a wasp!
Cheers,
Drew.

I take it this feature was the 1st of the show? I watched Top Gear but only from about 8.15 and saw no Golfs!

There wasn't too much of the Mk1 in it…Only really Clarkson reversing the Mk5 into it!

I agree with the comments about the badge and there was not that much about the mk1 BUT for Mr Clarkson to say on national tv "i voted the mk1 GTI the best car of the 20th century" was the best praise you could get when you consider he has driven hundreds of cars and exotic machinery so i think his comments say it all NUFF SED

Whilst JC may have a lot of influence on the public, IMO he is egotistical, uninformed and has his head up his own a**e.
This is true. But he must have one of the best jobs in the world. Driving anything that moves and gets paid bucket by the bucket load

Like most people in positions of high visibility really I suppose. You've got to have a certain set of characteristics to get into these positions and be a success. Looking good on camera, pulling in the ratings and making thus making money for the company have a much higher priority than mundane things like factual accuracy and attention to detail!
I've lost track of the number of times I've tried to correct a few magazine references on the mk1 only to get the response, 'The editor changed it so it looked better…'
Television always 'corrupts' the subject it is covering. It's always flash, quick, punchy etc, but facts and detail and 'truth' tends to go out the window.
I have to say I still enjoy Top Gear, but my wife does too, and she really isn't into cars much at all. But she was in hysterics over the 'Porsche' bit in this weeks episode. What Top Gear has managed to do is make 'cars' much more accessible to the general public by including the celebs, bits of political comment and sillyness. It's a good formula for most people, which is why its been very successful…. but an in depth car review programme it will never be again!
Yes, TV presenters are an egotistical bunch, but they simply wouldn't be any good if they weren't.
Cheers,
Drew.

You're right Drew. Programs like Top Gear I usually get moaned at for watching because wife/kids don't want to - now all of us watch Top Gear - it is a very entertaining show, even if my wife and daughter don't like cars!

Have to disagree there, Quentin being a prime example. His reviews I find to be more factual and down to earth. William Woolard the same. Tiff ain't bad when he is testing a car on the road rather than giving it beans, showing off around the track.

I drove the mk5 yesterday at knockhill and loved it. The track was wet and because of the traction control/esp i could not get the thing to spin. Some people will probably say this defeats the purpose of being a gti but having all that power it really needs the gadgets for safety reasons more than anything else.
I think it will be a big hit..
