Was the GTI the first car to have the black arches ?

Hi
 I've seen so many vehicles recently with the arch cappings are golfs have.  From new ford transits to minis .I'm sure it was a Giorgetto design special for the golf . Any body confirm that ?.  
  They say copying is the best compliment  , but i've even seen a vacume cleaner and gas fire with GTI badges on.

Some of the eighties mini specials had black arch spats - I'm not sure if before or after the Golf though. :dontknow:
