VW transponder keys?

Anyone know what do do? been here before?

I want to get a new key for my Mk3 TDI. So I went to VW and got one then tried to get it programmed at a couple of key cutting places. They cant do it! They can only read whats on the key and not overwrite it. It seems only VW can.

I went to VW and they said they need to reprogram the existing key I have and the ECU as well as the new key. Sounds a bit nuts! They want about ?40 inc VAT for doing it!!! Is there a cheaper way?

TBH ?40 is pretty good for that kind of thing.

True, I needed a key cut for my Seicento and cos I didnt have the magic 'Red Key' the dealer wanted ?250 for an ECU reprogram and keys!!!
