transport costs
Does anyone know much about transporting cars? Which companies are good to use (pick up in the south going to north yorkshire)? Would it be better/cheaper to find a company based up here to go down and back or one down saarf to come up here with the car and then go bk? Whats a reasonable price? Are there any members who transport cars? (would rather give my hard earned to a member than some random company)
You can guess by this tread that Ive seen a mk1 project that tickles my taste buds!!

i know guys in hull and south yorks who will do it.
Do you need flatbed, or a-frame? is the car a rolling shell? Can it be driven onto said towing vehicle? or will it need to be pulled/pushed mechanically or is it just shell, does it drive or have mot/tax?
obviously costs vary dependent on it.

No tax No test, It runs so can be driven onto a trailer.
I was thinking 'Im on my way to a test centre officer' but 260 miles of motorway is just too risky!!!
I had 1 quote of ?350 which sounds VERY expensive! :dontknow:

?350 isn't bad from south to north yorks.. depends on the mileage and method of transport tbh…
can get lot cheaper… depends what you wnt.

dave, i used 'carmover' who are based darn saaarf to get my corrado here.
250 miles = ?250 quid, so a quid a mile.
it shouldn't make a difference if the car is down south and the company up here or vice versa, as the distance is still the same; so in my case it was 500 miles.
if you give us some more details by PM, i could have a word with the guys in the next unit to me, i think they'd be quite reasonable.

for such a distance, i'd say a flat bed or trailer is best.
not sure of the legality of a car with no tax/mot being on an A frame

I do vaguely remember a thread about that in the past and it was decided that all 4 wheels had to be clear of the ground.

My farther-in-law has a freelander and i think it may have a towbar!? will have to have a look. the cheapest way to do this would be to collect it our selves if we can wouldnt it?!?
Im a bit worried about getting ahead of myself here as, although i know what needs doing to the car and the problems (only what the sellers told me), Ive not actually seen it! Im waiting for some pics before making any decisions but wanted to know if bringing a car that needs quite a lot of work 260 miles is goin to be cost effective!? If transport costs as much as the car would, then I'd be better off not bothering and looking closer to home wouldnt i? :dontknow:

Last time I did it I found it was cheapest to hire a van (Arrow self drive for me) with a towbar then I used a friends trailer. What id suggest is finding out the hire cost of a trailer and seeing how that works out as the van was only 50 quid for the day.
If you can use the freelander then thats half the battle then you can use that 50 quid towards the price of hiring a trailer.

Hi Dave I've got a 4x4 with a tow bar you could tow your trailer with if you put the Diesel in.
I don't really like towing (thats why I've just sold my 6m boat) but we could split the driving between us if your insurance covers you
I'm in Warrington Cheshire and it is no problem to help out if you like the 4x4 is a Hyundia Terracan and I think its towing weight is over a ton but you can check all that out on the web.
But the offer is no charge just the fuel cost I think it does about 30 ish to the gallon.

An A frame can only be used for recovery purposes, to tow a broken down car to a place of safety. Ie off the motorway to the nearest services.

When i had a car picked up from down south, i wrote out a message with what i wanted picking up , the addresses of the pick up and drop off points, and also a little note on there saying you would not mind waiting a few days until the recovery company had a drop of or pick up in the area to combine your car pick up with.
Then what i did was copy the message and send it to loads of the recovery people on ebay with the same message, and got loads and loads of quotes. Some very cheap aswell, cheapest i found was this guy
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PROFESSIONAL-Car-Transport-New-Classic-Recovery-Plant_W0QQitemZ200266243540QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200266243540&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1308&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
might not be the cheapest so would definatly message a lot more of them aswell.
Whats the car, or don`t you want to say just yet ?
cheers kenno
