Still, if that's what people are willing to pay!
I just bought immaculate grey pin stripe seats from evilbay for ?127.
Sounds a lot, but they ARE getting harder to find and I'm well chuffed.

people are num in the brain paying that much - was out driving to my sisters place one day and she lives opposite a mechanic - he had a wee 1.1 golf in - I said you breakin it? He says no sell it complete or nothing… i says ?10er for the shelf - he says - i'll get you the screw driver!

10! and sure they are handi made too - all this 'rare' business stick a decent engine in it instead of this rare nonsense over shelves!

i must apologise for the abruptness of that post…

I've delt with this guy in the past, he does seem to get top money for stuff, I think he breaks various older vw's. I'm sure I've seem him post ads on the scirocco register under a different user name for (expensive) mk2 scirocco stuff

Personally I put him into "Just VW Audi" (referance for MR GTI)   territory with his prices, I asked him how much for a DX engine? ?150

But if you can get those sort of price then good luck….

Cary Quiff Knows Him much better,

His Name is Alastair Clark & he is near Oxford.

He does Break Vw's & is doing it since a very long time. you can tell from his feedback.

But paying ?60 for a parcel shelf is crazy. I rather live without 1. But i guess its down to indivisual choices i guess.

I have 2 shelves, neither with holes in them! One of them has the usual cracks, the other one is good.

I've done the sensible thing, I have hidden the parcel shelf by folding it flat against the rear seat backrest, thus leaving the contents of the boot on show. After all, I wouldn't want someone breaking into the car and stealing my valuable parcel shelf!!!!

Paul mate you are correct,

By the looks of it the way things are going looks like one day the Parcel shelf will be more expensive than the Car

It's hard to see for sure, but I'm not fully convinced that that one is even a GTI shelf

The regular ones have just a cheaper-looking covering on them, whereas the GTI ones have a better-looking cover and leatherette (vinyl) piping stitched on down each side…

A better pic would clarify things…

There are many versions (as well as colours) of rear shelves in the Mk1 Golf's history. There are variations in the design shape, functionality (handle, locating rod), cloth weave/texture. As the early (especially pre'77) versions are a lot more fragile, on top of the fact there are few about, some can quite legitimately be classed as "rare" and hence more valuable.

So you see a shelf is not just a shelf if one looks closely enough.

What about this? Ok, it may be genuine, but i bought one from gsf for about 3 or 4 quid! Again, that wonderful word 'rare'!

OMG is goes on…and on…

Just a thought: my car has a grubby/cracked, but genuine, gearknob AND a parcel shelf (+spare). Does this mean its worth more?

Maybe buying advice for a Golf GTI these days should be:

What's the gearknob like?
What's the parcel shelf like?
Is there any serious structural corrosion?
etc etc
