Strange how things work out!

I always thought that when the time came to buying a mk1 after travelling that I would buy a very tidy example of a mk1 for around 3-4K.  However I hadnt been back in the U.K. long and/or built up anywhere near that amount when I felt I wanted to view a few cars and if I came across one I liked and could afford to buy it then why not, so I did.

Now the mk1 I have got does require work and is by no means close to mint at this point - however I have found that I enjoy spending at least one day each weekend working on the car and getting things into a slightly better shape and I also feel that I can feel safer using the car in the condition it is in as a daily driver, where as I'd be slightly worried about leaving a mint campaign parked in Tesco car park or the likes.

Suppose the point I'm trying to make is that I think I actually get more enjoyment out of owning a mk1 of lesser value when I thought it would be the other way around.

Just wondered if anyone has ended up in a similar situation? Or disagree and find they could'nt do without their mint mk1 in their life?

The next step will be to buy a mint one for the garage to take out on special outings!

I know exactly how you feel. I respect people who spend ?3-4k or more on mint Mk1 Golfs and keep them in good condition, after all they are preserving the Mk1 and its these cars which have the best chance to survive on and on. But similar to you, I bought an old, poor condition one (for ?495) with the intention of working on it. Its currently in hundreds of pieces at the moment, I've had my off days but when I work on it I love it!

Totally agree mate,

I decided not to go for a mint one as i knew id be using it as a daily driver and as such i didn't want to let someones hard work go to waste. Im not saying i dont look after mine, but its nice not to be worrying about letting it get rained on, etc.
