STOP BY POLICE
I was stopped by police last night, the cause was my first number plate is 3 digits or letters, followed by a space and than four digits or letters. The policeman told me that I have to change my registration or next time I'll get a fine. I told him is because my car is 1983 reg.! He told me is doesn't matter I still need to change! I am sure he is wrong!

So long as its correctly spaced, you're okay - have you the correct spacing, with double the space between the group of letters, then group of numbers, then the Y? Or have you altered it? Pic???

Yeah you need another plate made up, the Y is too close to the 400 there I think.

Theres nothing wrong with that reg plate. I would go to the local station, get something off them to say its ok, and keep it in the car for next time they stop you. As long as its spaced out like this ( ABC 123D ) its legal!

Just read in the Sunday paper that the Government are considering relaxing the spacing law by the summer, this will make some plates they sell more attractive and expensive, more revenue for the government
To me that makes sence. If the money goes to the Government, it might stop them on taxing us on every thing we do!
I bet it cost us money the bloody clocks went forward last night!!!!!!!!

Does the plate have the BS marking on it (I assume you needed to get a new plate made up)? Who made up the plate?

This might be handy:
from http://www.regtransfers.co.uk/main/car_numberplates_regulations.asp
The size and spacing of number plate characters is specified in the regulations, as follows:
Each character must be 79mm high and 50mm wide (except the number 1 or the letter I). The width of each character stroke must be 14mm. There must be a space of 11mm between characters within the same group, and character groups must be 33mm apart. For the purposes of measurement, each character (again, excepting the number 1 or the letter I), regardless of its shape, is treated as a rectangular block of dimensions 79mm x 50mm
