Soon to be sorn'd !
Only another couple of opportunities to drive my mk1 before it gets sorn'd and taken off road for repairs. Tax runs out at the end of this month.
I've decided my car will go through a series of phases until ultimately it gets restored at some point in the future. I thought about replacing it with another mk1, but you know how these things are…. I've been through rather a lot with that car, not to mention the TV programmes and stuff. It's part of the family and will stay.
Phase 1 : Immediate repairs required….
To be done by reputable garage….
New front valance + stone chipping protection.
New sills (might as well do both, since one is junk and the other has some fairly heavy stone chipping)
Nearside wing repair
Replacement slam panel, with care to preserve vin plate etc
Paint as appropriate
To be done by me
Replacement front main lights
Replacement front indicators and housings
Replacement twin lamp grille, or single grille if I can't find one. (Keep the Campaign one safe)
Replacement front disks
Replacement front bumper, if I can find one.
A lot of work, thanks to a split second impact with a small-ish rock! :x
Phase 2: Minor modifications whilst preserving original items
Modifications… me? Yes, I know, but oddly…. I'll be modifying in order to preserve some of the standard components…
I might indulge in a jetex exhaust as I have a genuine VW on there at the moment and it might be nice to preserve it for the future, since you can't get these anymore. (And I have to say the standard exhaust does let the car down a bit in looks)
Shocks need replacing too. I will put my BBS RAs back on tp preserve the pirellis.
I have a set of standard VW shocks in storage, so I might use a non standard set for a while and keep these safe for the future too, same goes for the springs.
So I may have a 'slightly non-standard' phase while I obtain an entire inventory of standard bits to restore the car 100% in the future.
I will probably keep the car in this state for a few years and enjoy driving around.
Phase 3 : Acquisition of all parts required for restoration and then restore!
Will take some time, and will ultimately be an engine out respray job, not planned for earlier than 2010 though. I'll be acquiring parts from now onwards though….
Cheers,
Drew.
