Removing and fitting the glass on a mk1

I had a leak in the footwell so I decided to remove all the glass to check the drainage holes in the rubbers. Took me about 2 hours to remove all the glass and refit it. I had removed and refitted the glass on my own!!

Easy really, all you do to remove the glass is peel back the rubbers on the corner and push from the inside, simple as that. The secret of refitting is  is to pour plenty of fairy liquid around the rubber, feed in the brick line  in the groove then drop the pull the rubber.

easy!

lahsa,

nice one - you gave me the confidence to do the screen on the silver golf a few weeks back.  I did it using about 8 flat bladed screwdrivers of all sizes.  Pushed then in from the inside to hold the rubber lip away eventually the screan eased out - no twisting, no pushing took about 10 mins to get the screen out.

Fitting is a piece of preverbial - like the tip to use a brick line as they are nylon? and won't bind with the rubber seal.

Only question is the use of washing up liquid as it is loaded with salt (to make it thick) - thats why you should not wash your car with it.  I rekon some other lube like shampoo (avoid anti dandruff and henna brands   ) or vasaline (leave it!)

'Fraid so - it's got lots of salt in it…

PS: Perhaps Vaseline not the best choice, as petroleum-based products might damage the winscreen rubbers (can't remember where I read that…     )

I used waxoyl to get a quarterlight back in, worked a treat.

Not tried Waxoyl in the bedroom.

Stop it going rusty I suppose - especially through periods of no use

So if I have a go with some flat screwdrivers and a bit of elbow grease, I should be OK ?? No special tool needed  :o

Thanks for the advice. Has anyone got some green glass spare in case I break anything.

Probably do my glass swap on Christmas Day, once the mother in law has tired me out. (Although not in the biblical sense).

I shall report back after Christmas once I have took it out. Not bothered too much about breaking the clear glass. Ought to practice on that first.
