I do know a lad with the ex-DesignaDubs 20vt mk1, but havent been in it yet…
Mines Crap and slow as it has a slipping clutch and nowhere near that power…lol

In top gear from 70 to well off the clock in about 3-4 secs, :clap:
keeping up with porsche carrera gt's easy.

A mk1 is lighter than a mk3 so would require a diff change sooner than a Mk3 with the same power.
Track and race cars tend to be driven harder so a driving wheel in the air happens more often so making a llimited slip diff nessearcy to get the power down and keep moving at a high speed.
The diff is after the final drive on the gearbox and is where your drive shafts are connected. As the Golf is front wheel drive its part of the gearbox, if it was a rear wheel drive car it would be part of the back axle. eg BMW, MG Midget etc
