Price of MK1s are falling in value
I've noticed that the price of MK1s are falling (including S1 - 2 on ebay at below 2k). Could it be that car manufacturers are struggling in the market place and are dropping prices accordingly, hence making new cars very attractive?

I've noticed falls in values on ebay, as well as the ads in the papers and magazines. Good news for anyone wanting a Golf MK1.

I guess you are correct there is a high Risk involved in buying from e-bay
But some good ones still hold their value & its hard to find out a decent motor these days

Its probably just time time of year - car prised are seasonal. Best time to buy a car is the week before Xmas. You need to look at average values - I think you will find that Mk1 prices stopped falling many years ago.

I don't think they are falling. Prices for good original cars will always be a premium. There was a classic car dealer selling a Y reg Mars red, with 77k on clock for ?4950 (or was it ?5950 - can't recall.)
Remember that E bay is probably for those cars where the owner has not been able to sell it elsewhere - hence most likely to be tatty or needing some major work.
Anyway who wants to sell ? I don't. It would take a big bloke with a gun to prise my car off me.

 I agree, I'll be the one taking my Mk1 to it's grave if it ever becomes irrepairable

Ebay is definately NOT the place to sell a car . Ask the seller of our MK4 Cabriolet , sold at ?1800 below book price [Parkers guide private sale] with no reserve . He had paid ?8000 at a dealer the year before . We paid half that !
The second hand car market is awash with vehicles . Reason , new one's are cheap as chips and finance is easy to get . When i was a lad A new Golf MK1 GTI was well over ?7000 . I was earning enough to borrow a maximum of ?2000 [so said my bank manager] now you can get as much money as you want !
The MK1 will remain a very saleable item provided its in good condition , when was the last time you saw a mid 1970's produced car featured in magazines as much as MK1's ?
What other car of its age has a young following ?
Why do we not have a price guide for all types , conditions and years on the web site ? It would be a great guide for all . Any body selling could refer to it before placing the car for sale .
Cheers…….

A black met. campaign has showed up again in the loot at ?1,200 ono. The market for mk1 has slumped (IMO), and don't forget I own a mk1.
Chudd thats an excellent idea, are you going to do the honours?

Price guide!
I think a price guide would be an excellent idea but being accurate and honest will be difficult because we all will be of the opinion that are cars are worth more than they really are! Truth is, the car is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay at the time!! With the mk1 becoming a modern day classic and numbers dropping due to cars being broken for parts etc, I honestly believe that an excellent example will always command the price. Now that we have an owners club the better cars will no doubt stay with enthusiastic owners so I have no worries as to my investment..I'm with Adolf…Nobody will take my car at any price!

I made a Mk1 Price Guide for the hatchbacks.
It was for my purposes (i.e. my valuations, but based on experience and actual selling prices) but if it is of any help to someone then please use it. It is a guide only with no guarantee of value as this depends on an individual car's circumstances.
Cheers

I used 7 categories to try and cover the complete range of vehicles out there. Some people on here are trading vehicles for breaking and others are looking for the holy grail. I found if you only use 3 categories it starts to become less useful.
My experience of cabs is not as good. For example, how much to replace a mohair hood? ?800? Such an single expensive item could send a vehicle to a premature grave.
