premium fuels
In Australia for example we have fuels like Shell Opitimax and BP Ultimate which say they contain cleaning agents for your car, etc.

You won't get any benefits running those fuels if your car isn't tuned for them. More air is needed to get the most out of them.
I run my Teg on Optimax because of the cleaning properties. BP Ultimate's stupidly expensive in the UK.

My read of that implied that Texaco was the one to go for and optimax is a rip off?

Hairyarse you are my personnal jesus christ , ive always used optimax (dident know it lost octane) , but my missus refuses saying its all the same stuff and tescos is good enough for her rocco , Shes gonna have that waved under her nose before she can put her bags down tonight as her car is always getting carb problems (blocked jets etc). On the additives front as i said i always use optimax , when i removed my tsr head off the mk2 (to transplant on my mk1) it was absolutley spotless , no deposits at all just a thin film of oil , i was impressed to say the least and for that reason alone i'd recommend its use . It is getting pricey though .
Glad to assist with a bit of ammo - will she be wanting custard with her 'humble pie?!'
