Yep, it is! Check out his for sale thread from October last year.

http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4510&highlight=gareth

If you do a search of posts with his user name you'll get to know a lot of the history of the car and what was done. Our member 'tallpete' knows the car well too I think.

That said, I know Gareth really looked after it so you got a good buy there (pending price!! ) Serisouly, nice one. I would have been tempted myself when he advertised it if only I had the cash back then!

Cheers

I'm made up to find that out thankyou. Chuffed to know the previous owner was an enthusiast and that the car is returning to the club. I bought it in March and paid ?1950 I know thats getting on for top end but It is a beautiful car in lovely condition. I wash it every weekend and wax it every other. There was a little bubble of rust below the rear wind screen and on the drivers side rear quarter panel which I have had sorted and there was also a little bit around the windscreen which has also been sorted. Next on teh list is to change all the rubber seals as they look a bit tired and also grind down and repaint the underside of the bonnet as it looks like having some surface rust. The drivers seat also has to be replaced due to wear. If Tall Pete or Gareth are reading I'd like to know if the tare in the roof lining at back is a result of the bee sting aerial or if it has happened since. The car is not perfect but is very near. I reckon about a grand and I'll start entering some show and shines with it and of course I'll be at Gaydon. Just one thing worrying me is that in Gareths sale thread it says the car has "some service history". Well it now seems to have full volkswagen service history which is  part of the reason I paid what I did. Again if Gareth or Tall Pete could tell me exactly how much history there was with it I'd appreciate it.

Cheers for now

It looks great, and for me that's the 'definative' look of the Golf GTI (black, original 9 spokes, series 2, etc) - mine is the same but X reg. Oh, and its in thousands of little bits and the main bit is quite rusty too!

Do you realise the car is very close to, but not totally original looking? I think it should have a thin silver stripe along each side; and of course the headlamps are different to stock.

I'm here!

That sure is Mr Briggs car.

He did so much work to that car that I bet he didn't even keep receipts for!

Don't know about the history pre Gareth I'm afraid.

If I had space I would have bought it myself. 1800 with no sunroof, mmmm.

The rip in the headlining is due to the beesting. fitted way before gareth got hold of it. And it got resprayed pre Gareth which I am guessing is where the thin stripe down the middle went.

How you getting on with the shocks and springs? Gareth and I always thought it was a bit to unforgiving.

Anyway, well done mate you got a goodun especially at that price, pleased to see it's gone to a good home, I wondered if it would turn up here.

Peter.

I do find the suspension very unforgiving do slalom down my road avoiding pot holes. but on the plus side it does grip very well. Can you get the original stripes anywhere as I do want to get it back to standard. May leave the headlights as I like them. The beesting has to go but thats low down on the list of priorities
Have a warm glowing feeling in my belly hearing the appreciation for the car. It is my pride and joy and it's nice others appreciate it too. Hope too see you at some show's. Is anybody off to Hatton on the 21st?

You can pick up the stripes on eBay or I think GPC do them?

Depending on the colour match that can be achieved you may have to replace them all?

I took all mine off because they were so badly matched.

I think it's one of those things I might pay some one to do properly bit like the roof lining. I'll have a crack at most things but if I don't match them or get them on straight or something it will ruin it for such a simple little thing.

Most graphics companies should be able to do these for you and cheeper than buying a set of ebay and getting someone to fit'em, a full set made in the right colour ( or as near as damit ) cost me a tenner from my local sign writer
