flushe the boot lid, so no lock or wiper

Noooooo - all the things you listed are the things that i think look naff - apart from maybe some wheels - spend your money on tuning that motor so it all looks stock but drives anything but  :D

So modded but no so's you know

i voted for modified but didnt read all the post

I'd say no to adding a clipper/big bumper kit, i wanted to go down this route and i've seen a veiw examples now and i dont think they look right. Unless there orginaly fitted like cabbys then i'd go with less stubble mods…like coilovers, wheels indicators …things like that…

But thats me…

Restoring it back to orginal would hold more money i would of thought, theres a highly modded 1 for sale in the classifeids for ?4000 and its not sold yet

Voted standard as I generally prefer these and the mods you mention don't look good IMO and make the car less valuable and harder to sell on. If you choose to mod it keep the original parts as you will do better to sell items such as different lamps, wheels separately.

Your car should be a 5-speed for a 1981 BTW (assuming a 1.6 GTi rather than a carb)

Dont supose i can have original and modified as the outside of mines standard , the underside is very moded , as i said to my girlfriend i'm not trying to take its soul i'm just giving it a heart transplant . Theres nothing i couldent put back to standard though , so i guess its standard for me . Although without modded ones would some people lose interest in a mk1 and look elsewhere . Difficult call .

IMO keep the mods to items that can be easily reverted back to the standard items. That way, if you ever change your mind about things its easy and quick to put back. Also if you ever wanted to sell it you'd make your money on the std mk1, and sell the other bits on as spares.

Major mods on a MK1 imo are a no no, as it then becomes only worth what someone is willing to pay for it in the modded state.

If you counted up all the Mk1s still running, you'd probably have more modified ones than standard ones. So, for rarity (= sought after when selling) go completely standard. I can't think of any mods which would increase the value of a car, never mind increasing it enough to pay back the cost of the change.

Inherently expensive or rare period parts that are easily reversible will increase the value of the car, especially if the standard parts are kept. I am thinking RMs, Le Castellets, rare VW chrome parts, etc. I think Clipper kits do not as they are neither rare, period or easily reversible.

they are wheels mate, nice too. its personal opinion when coming to the old kasabien modding it' change the brakes and suspension 8O if you go to effort of doing that you wont want to sell it, then change the engine…………………….. :|  there aint a bad mk1 so you are laughing,
good luck,

Deffo a big no no on the clipper kit, they just don't look right on a tin top, strange how cabby's pull it off though!

I agree with everyone else really, stick to mod's that are subtle and easily removed.. that way if you sell it you have a bigger audience of buyers

IMO all it takes to improve the look of a Mk1 is to lower it and get a set of wheels (no bigger than 15" or you'll have a rollerskate… As Dubboy said period wheels are a good choice)

at the end of the day though it is your car, and if that's what tickles your fancy crack on

To be totally honest…its your car, your spending the money, spendit how you want, on what you like :D

But, i would listen to all the views, but if you want a fully modified car…..go for it, be a little different to the norm of amost standard mk1's

Not voted as both are right depending on how you view it.

I am a fan of modded Mk1's myself, but they have to be done correctly, IE - NO CLIPPER KITS OR CRYSTAL LIGHTS!!!!! Uuuuurrrrgggggghhhhhh!  :banghead:

I like tastfully modded. Just dont hurt the car in anyway meaning that you cant change it back. Dont cut any metal ! Stay away from damn audi door handles and bonnet vents  :(

Sensible mods,
i put a set of 15"bbs multispokes off of a friends Corrado G60 at the weekend and it absolutely transforms the car, much better presence on the road not to mention better grip and handling.

but i dont agree with fitting body kits/sideskirts etc.
IMO VW got the MK1 styling spot on the first time around!

same here, the only decent mods needed on a mk1 are to lowerd it!!

Pehaps do it in stages? Get yourself some Alloys, then see what you think, lower it then see what you think, change lights then see what you think? Designing/customising your car to be how you like is a personal thing, and should be what you believe and like. If standard isnt right for you, make it right. Think about it, the best fitting clothes are those that you have tailored.

Deffo a big no no on the clipper kit, they just don't look right on a tin top, strange how cabby's pull it off though!

Karmen designed the car and the kit so you would expect this! It only takes a tiny detail to change and the overall look can go way off. You only need to drop cars a few cm's and the whole stance transforms. So cutting the roof off will change it big time.

What ever you do, ENJOY a GREAT CAR!  :D  :D  :D
