In France a specialversion of the mk1 was available called 16S modified by Oettinger. That car had that cylinder head mounted on the EG-engine and was whopping out 136 hp. Cost a fourtune compared to the basic version.

I was just wondering if that head really will fit anything else than the EG engine?? The EG head has no combustion chamber in the head(?) only in the piston.

Anyway cool to see. For those who like to see some more pictures and/or actually can understand french here?s a link: http://www.golftype17.com/index1024.htm

You really want a full engine (or even a full car).  The 16S ran a fully balanced bottom end and had a baffled sump - they rev to 8000 rpm too!!  136bhp from a 1.6 is very healthy!

The reason for it was that the Mk1 GTI wasn't seen as being fast in france where they had the likes of the Renault Gordini 5 Turbo being sold.  French laws are really restrictive on modifications too so people simply weren't buying the GTI, hence the factory produced GTI 16-S (of which 1250 examples were produced)…
