if a a4 or passat i'm not fussed if its a saloon or not becuase i'm a keen fishermen and an estate would be great
also being a daddy i would benifit from the extra room

I had a new passat for a while, new shape with the electronic handbrake and just found it a bit boring.
Think the A4 is a good car, but you pay a premium for them in some circumstances , and i only like the S sline version and RS4 obviously
How much are you looking to spend ?
stick VAG and you cant go wrong, ive got to change my civic type s GT diesel next year, and i though about the above, but im thinking more and more of going with a skoda octavia VRS diesel estate, get all the reliability and loads of toys and dont pay a premium for the badge !

tbf iv heard nothing but good things about the golf. passats seem very popular so must be a reason for that and apparently A4s are really economical and generally good cars. our family car is an A3 tdi and really cant fault it. amazing fuel economy, comfy, quick, reliable. economy wise Audi seems to be the way to go..
but rich has a good point about the badge premium.

but i'm looking at late 90's cars and not 51 plate onwards
and josh a3's can hold stupid money which i think ain't worth it
if i get a golf i'm looking at the top end of my budget
but a4 and passats sell from 800 upwards depending on mileage etc

so for more bang for your buck get the passatd, for fuel economy/performance try and get the PD130 TDI and as Ady said up a bit, simple chip see's em hitting 170BHP with loads n loads of torque
I looked into all option late last year and bought a newer passat as its a hell of a lot of car for the money..

but this is only a stop gap motor as all the passats and a4's i saw i hated and where over priced for what i really thought they were worth in my mind,
as funk star once said its worth as much as someone is willing to pay, and everything i saw was not worth a 3rd of what are the asking price was
the 306 is m reg 134,000 on the clocks and set me back 250 even had a full tank
