National Shows we should attend

Drew asked on the Bodlywotsit ops:  thread for reviews of National shows that ?we? should attend.

On the Sunday of the 1st May bank Hol I went to the Stanford Hall show. I had not been for approx 6 or 7 years. Back in the late eighties and early to mid nineties it was an annual pilgrimage for me as I had a 1966 Beetle. It was then quite a small predominantly air-cooled show with pre-67 vintage beetles, even some WWII VWs etc.

Now it was approx 3 times bigger, still with vintage stuff but many more trade stands and quiet a few club stands including Karmann Ghias, Porsche, Audi, Last Edition Beetle, and what looked like the entire split screen type 2 community! 8O

What did disappoint me was the small number of MK1s. There was an early blue 3 door and a few of cabs and a couple of GTIs but they where spread across the fields in different displays. I think one problem was that the organisers group all water cooled cars in one section for judging? :dontknow:  This mixes in Passats and Polos.

Seeing as the show is aimed at original VWs and not MaxyP type stuff I think it would be an ideal location for the club to increase its profile not only in the VW world but to a wider public. Stanford Hall also has the advantage that its reasonably centrally located and EVERY time I have gone, approx 12 times over the last 20 years, its always been a bright sunny day!

I never been but heard from others that its a nice place to go. One for the calendar for next year then

If folks can list the shows name and why they think we should go, that would be grand!

The blue Mk1 was  mine!

There are 2 classes as Stanford Hall suitable for Mk1 Golf:

- Golf GTi
- Other Watercooled (non GTi)

There are many similar club displays at Stanford Hall: Polo Register, Club Audi, Club Porsche, Vinatge VW Club, etc

Weather and settings are splendiforous.

Other shows are:
All Types, N Wales
VW Northwest at Tatton Hall, Cheshire
VW Action at Herts County Showground

I still think it is worth attending GTi International. Lovers of standard cars ARE there (I had plenty of interest in my little standard Golf L), and with a decent Club presence it could be a fun event (spoilt only by the weather!). We need to support this event and get it back to being one of the world's best Golf (esp GTi) show.

I actually had fun at Inters, despite forgetting my coat on the first day and not selling my door cards!

Could be improved by the punters section divided up into different marques. I was worn out walking up and down all the rows of cars to look at the mk1s!

I liked the stand selling 25"+ alloys, what cars did they think were gonna turn up?

Not the biggest show in the country but needs more watercooled involvement. Always plenty of interest in the Mk1's that attend (Only 2 Gti's last year, so it wasn't difficult for me to pick up first place in that show'n'shine category!). It is a fairly relaxed show'n'shine too - they aren't too particular!

i think the edition38 is a must but then again i would say that  

I only saw highly modified cars at Edition 38. Most of the interest on here is for standardish cars.

As promised some piccys from this years Stanford Hall including Rajans pristine MK1.  I would have included some more Golfs but like I said out of the hundreds and hundreds of VWs on display only a very few were MK1 Golfs.

Other water cooled stuff;

As a Northerner, Tatton is a must for me. I have been for the past 2 years and found it to be a very good venue. Herts Showground was another good location. Just off the M1 at J9, makes it easy to find and there was plenty of camping room… don't know about the facilities though.  :dontknow:

My local Club GTI mate go to BVF in Wales and report good things.

Rounding off the year with a Christmas theme is usually the done thing at Utterly Vee-Dubberly…just think "red and white Father Christmas Mk1's" ahhh!!

Its all a bit immaterial for me really with less than a week to go before the First Born arrives!! It's all gonna change….

I also think that e38 is a great show. How about a meet at Club GTI open day in July at Curborough - Litchfield. You dont have to race and there are plenty of things going on?

Seriously though, GTI International is the only Vdubya show I've been to mainly cause it's so near to where I live. I would have liked to have gone to the the Boddelwyyan All types.

Has anyone been to BugJam? Any Mk1's there? That's on the 24th July this year.

i think that the mk1 club would get more interest at aircooled shows. the mark one is one of those inbetween cars that both aircooled fans and watercooled fans love . only difference is watercooled heads prefer there cars moddified. air cooled heads have more of an interest in standard cars. in my opinion!

plus air cooled shows have a far more laid back atmosphere.
