Hi Graham

Are you planning on doing the work yourself or getting a garage to do it??

If you have little mechanical experience you'll probably struggle.

Have a look at the engine conversion guides (link on the left side of the page) that'll give you some info on the most common conversions :)

Hope that helps!

I haven't done an engine conversion myself, however i've read and heard lots about it!

The vr6 conversion requires alot of modification to the engine bay to make it fit. Also it's a very big heavy lump which hanging over the front end can cause some savage understeer.

You'd have much less hassle going down a small engine root. If you're fixated with the power coming from a the Vr6 you can get similar output from the 20vt aka 1.8 turbo conversion. This will also be alot easier to do to.

ABF, perfect power for a mk1 and easy to fit when compared to a vr6 or 20vt lump.

You will have to get your engine mount relocated to use a big block engine though.

ABF engine is definatly something to think about,i want to do a couple of track days….eventually  :)  so want something that can take a bit of a thrashing and not mind being 'tweaked'

if it was me id have 1.4 16v lump from a polo/mk4, direct bolt in swap for your car. cheap tax and insurance too, 112bhp as std and more available with some tweaks. plus seems more 'original' to the car if that makes sense keeping it small block

abf and other big block 1.6-2.0 4 cyl engines require driver side mount bracket cutting off chassis leg and rewelding upside down in a different spot. vr6 requires a LOT of cutting and welding, not an easy job at all

Would you be able to keep the gearbox with that mk4 polio conversion?

you can if you like yes, though it'll be a 4 speed. if you go 5 speed just need to do the old cut n shut mk1 small block 5 speed mount bracket
