More Proof Mk1's don't like going to Devon!

well, it was my turn to try and make it down to Devon over the weekend in the Mk1! everything was going well for the first 20-30 miles… then the wheel bearing started making a noise (didn't think much of it as I've driven for thousands of miles with them doing they're wurr wurr wurr, odn't worry.. that was in a F**d)

got about 90 miles into the trip… then a big crunch, grind, scratch noise followed by the car shaking it's 'rear' @ 75-80Mph  :banghead:

The wheel bearing fell apart at such a force it pretty much knocked the cap off!

Thankfully the very nice AA man took it to the garage and fitted a new bearing at around 9pm (still shocked they worked on it at that time!) but showed me the damage to the stub axle! not good, need a new one!

so had to abort the trip and snail it home at 50mph after they gracefully took ?70 off me!

leason learnt: if somethings making a noise.. fix it straight away or more damage will be done.. also, DON'T take your Mk1's to Devon, they just don't like it

Ouch that says alot for vw if it had been a vauxhall the whole wheel would ave come off . Good advice on  tracing noises although as soon as i fix one i notice another . I was thinking of buying those sound proofing headsets but you just proved that idea wont work . Got a spare stub here (somewhere ??? )if you need it.

There must be a curse (see my previous post) to go there. Mine ended up costin me over ?300 and I didnt even get half way. The thing that wound me up though is there's hundreds of vw's (old campers, beetles and mk1 golf classics) when you get there but I didnt pass one on my travel :dontknow:

maybe a mass of Mk1's going to devon would break this curse  :dontknow:

I'll try and break it (the curse that is), I'm off down there bodyboardin' in a couple of weeks. I like the roads down there, well at least when there not full of the annoying caravan brigade.

I'll make sure I check my bearings before I set off , it'll probably turn out to be the longest journey check ever.

I'm wondering if my MK1 will ever get out of Devon! My last one didn't while I owned it (and I bought it off the previous owner when the head gasket went on the way down here)

Dont forget to check your fuel pump as well. Mine was making a buzzin sound when I set off and it packed in by the time I got to Dudley (with a bit of help from the genius mechanic who put in 2 gallons of diesel).

I've had a rear wheel bearing collapse - Nearly lost the wheel, but I was only doing about 20 MPH. Must have been scary at 70!

My parents type 2 blew holes in both its cylinder heads while travelling back to Devon from the lake district. Then the YTS mechanic in the VW specialist garage we took it to in Barnstaple managed to put a knot in the accelerator cable so when we picked it up it had a top speed of 40mph!

My golfs have been really good reliability wise though and Devon has some cracking A and B roads. One of my favourites is the A39 from Bideford to Bude, its a windy road with some nice overtaking spots when you get to know them, its great fun, especially with the sun out and the top down.

If anyone actually makes it down to the North Devon area, let me know if you want to meet up for a beer.

Cheers,

Ross

You're right the A39 to bude is a great road, I went down it in my old mk1 and I'll be going down it again (hopefully not on the back of a AA truck) to a place called kilkhampton.

I'm only about 2 or 3 miles away - I'll have to check it on the way home!
To work + Home lunchtime to see the little 'un + Back to work + Home in the evening = about 10 miles… :dontknow:  But I don't use the car every day. Maybe once or twice a week on average?!?

I filled up 4 times last month! about ?30 a time!

Last month was a bit abnormal though! I went to Bristol for the Ashton Court festival and has a couple of trips to Bude for work which is about 70 miles round trip.

Work and back each day is about 12 miles. Then the trip to my girlfriends is about 22 miles each way and I do this a few times a week.

All this is in my cab
