you can get various types depending on ya budget ,
how much do you love your car i suppose lol .
well worth it if ya dont have a garage
also suggest a trip to mechanic for a winter once over
use good oil , keep fluids nearly always full , warm ya car up properly for at least 10 mins obviously depending on how understanding ya neighbores are and always have a full tank ……

good luck with the car and winter , remember your driving a mini german tank whats the worst that could happen . . . these things were built to last
car covers from ebay , fairly reasonable if you shop around .
park on concrete.

All good advice, but don't do the warm up bit on tick over take it for a drive (10 miles approx). the problem with idling is is doesn't warm the engine up properly causes excesive wear and the exhaust will get aload of condinsation in it and last only short time,if you drive it the exhaust will get dry out properly and the engine will be thouroughly warmed up, and hey its a good excuse to take it for a spin.

I read something along these lines in a VW Manual the other day.

Its the hard way of doing a 2l 16v conversion you have to change the sump cams and a host of other bits ,there seem to be more of these engines floating about than the VW 2l 16v and some of them are pretty well looked after (only a little of the topic sorryballoon_man said
If you dropped the 2l Audi engine into the Golf what else would you have to change/upgrade ?
