LHD Mk1 available in UK?

There is section in the Stock Hatch regulations, which states the following:

"The Stock Hatch Championship is for competitors participating in 'hatchback' cars, available on general catalogued sale and available from stock through normal retail dealer outlets in the UK"

Given that my new Golf is LHD, this raises an issue as to my eligibility. It's not something I've only just discovered, but VW are taking ages to investigate this for me, and I was wondering if anyone on here knows one way or the other.

Unfortunately, i don't know the year of manufacture of my Golf. But were they ever, at any point in time, available in LHD in the UK as the regs describe above?

All dealersshould have the capability to order a car in the spec (including drive hand ) for you in any country.

Look how many people go to Germany or holland to get UK spec cars but cheaper !!!!!

If you have the VIN of the car, the year and date of manufacture can be found.

To my knowledge the only LHD Mk1s available as an official VWUK import sold though VW retailers were the '78 and '79 Model Year GTis, and even these do not appear in the UK catalogues.

They were the days before Block Exemption.
