how many last chances?

so

my car's on its last chance (again) probably for the XXXX time since we bought it five years ago.

when it's going good it goes very good but when it breaks down i (with additional pressure from louise who drives it every day) get the fear and threaten to get rid of it and get a 'sensible' daily driver.

but the car is sooooooo good to drive when it works (so i can't get rid) but as soon as it breaks down it does my head in

so how many chances has your mk1 had? when is enough….enough?

i'm off for a little cry now!

been driving mine about 5 months, had to call the AA twice so far, and fixed something with it nearly every week… every time I think   whats wrong now!!!

but like you say when they're going good they go very good.. working or not I couldn't sell it!

everybody I know that 'had' a Mk1 and sold it has regreted it

what you said is very true got so mad at mine i sold it and within less than a month realised it was the sillyest thing id ever done so begged and managed to buy it back  

hate the car at times with a passion but dont think id sell it unless it was for a bettter one  

I still kick myself for selling my first Campaign! I managed to hold out nearly 4 years before buying the one I have now, but couldn't help myself in the end.

My 205 Deisel never went wrong but I nearly fell asleep at he wheel a few times

one last ramble…if you like the car keep it….they all go wrong, some more than others (VW's are on the better side of this)

i bought my silver campaign by chance then couldn't afford to insure it or tax it . had it sat on drive 2 months resisting temptation to drive it . finally saved enough to make it legal took it for a spin and promptly broke down leaving me stranded , whilst waiting for rescue police turned up checked car over , phew glad i resisted and waited to be legal.bit miffed when copper called my car an old heap :?

My dad says that as well   I'm going to jot that one down for a time when I can use it too 8)

Ours seems to cost 300-400 every year on parts and labour ( I don;t have enugh time to fix it at the moment with 3 other projects on the go).

But the garage say it's solid, generaly sound so may as well spend the dough.

It's blown an engine, had a replacement carb, blown the clutch, puilld the clutch cable through the bulckhead, snaped exhaust, snapped hand break cable, 2 breakins, leaking screen after replacement, 3 accidents since we have had it!! ( none our fault 1 with a car transporter and one with a bus!! )

But what would we replace it with that's so easy to fix?

new cars go wrong just as often and they cost shed loads more to mend, and you have to put up with the indigity of a  " dealer " talking to like you are stupid, and then laughing at you behind your back. Just recently got quoted ?478 + vat to get an alternator done for my gf's skoda…….no thank you.

New cars - for people with more money than sense.   

…been there MANY times in the last 4 years, threatened the GTI hundreds of times with a trip to the big 'Golf Club in the sky' …….but just CANNOT do it !!! I was devastated after losing my first Mk1, and have been threatened that if I get rid of this one I will have to leave home ("….you're not leading me a life of it again….", even though we still have the Clipper !!!!

I've just had to have the head gasket done….so no readies AGAIN for Xmas……

Hang in there…..as said before…..'the joys of motoring'…….and another car could cost you a LOT more….Mk1 or other.

Also think of the thousands of pounds you lose through depreciation on a newer car. My mate lost ?9000 in two years on a car he bought new.

okay dudes points taken! just need to get it back to normal so i can give the git 'one more last chance' not sure that louise will be as sympathetic!

Ive done 13000 miles in mine inj ust over a year and the only problems Ive had were mainly self inflicted Ran out of petrol (was on my to the petrol staion though) and had my clutch go on the way to work so the AA man had to tow my to the garage but I knew it was on the way out and had already booked it to be replaced for the day after shouldnt really have been driving car.

So my little golf has been good (touch wood)

I keep telling my missus that tinkering with the Golf is half the reason for owning it.  

Having a neighbour who has to lash out thousands of pounds for clubs (membership fees and the sticks) for her golf obsessed son (the game involving sticks and funny shaped balls)  8O puts the bills for Golf repairs (the car) into perspective. :wink:

My Golf is cheaper than golf….

Oh - and we got married recently - and that makes the repair bills for the Golf seem like a bargain…..

'Touches a lot of wood' My Corrado G60 has been pretty good, thats only 13 years old!!

Shame the Mk2 i have had for 5 years has not been so good, 3 engines, 2 gearboxes, 8 sets of wheels, 4 sets of suspension and the list goes on, wheels and suspension were more to personal choice than necessary!!

Aaah…wise words!  We would all do well to remember that!  

I remind myself of that fact every time someone laughs at my choice of cars (usually my sister, who has a rather dull 'new' Renault)…I wouldn't want a new car any more than I would want to drill holes in my skull!

For all their annoying little habits/personalities/breakdowns I wouldn't swap my cab or my bug for all the gold in the world!  ops:
