Hey to anyone that can help :) Just got back from picking my first ever mk1 and have to say was the most fun ive had in a car in a long time :)

Anyways the car is a Gti Cab 1984 just a few questions really.

1. On idle when hot she seems to be ticking over at 1-1200 revs which seems a little high to me and also theres a slight miss, again only present when hot. Any ideas?

2. when driving some 50 miles back i noticed a light mechanical rattle whenever the throttle is depressed whether accelerating or at a constant speed. Seems top end and is not a heavy knock. I was thinking maybe pinking or tappets but again anyone had similar problems?

Apart from these 2 things at the moment nothing to report. Awesome car and cant stop smiling :).

If its idling high when hot, but not wandering or varying, then the idle speed is too high - which is simple enough to adjust. Its possible its been set like that deliberately because its not high enough during warmup. If so, then a mixture check through the warmup should be done, to find out what's amiss. Also it could be a non-functioning AAV (but this would only affect the first 5 mins or so of warmup).

If it has a slight misfire at hot idle, then you need to find why this is so - rich lean or ignition. I'd suspect ignition first, look at/clean up spark plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, etc before replacing any parts. A wideband lambda probe would tell you straight away if its lean/rich or ignition related (they blip to high O2 if an ignition miss occurs). It could also be a poor spray pattern from the fuel injectors, but this would be the next thing to check out.

The light tapping - does it come and go with throttle application? If so its pinking. If its consistent or just gets louder/quieter with throttle, then its probably tappets.

Thanks very much for quick reply. And yeah dissapears altogether when u come off the throttle so is pinking as i suspected. Wil have to grab myself a haynes manual and have a little play i think try and get my head around stuff. Only been a mechanic 6 years so is all electrics and remove and replace :) Mecahnical fuel injection!!! what the hells that lol. Whilst im here anyone reccomend any mods that are nice additions to a cabbie as this ones totally standard. ie uprated master cylinder maybe different suspension etc etc. I am gonna restore the car to its original state but things that arent noticeable or can be hidden that make the car that much nicer to drive i may give a go. Sorry! Maybe im being ignorant or just stupid lol But a solid roof? is a floppy top if thats what you mean :D  :dontknow:

Its an in-joke - Wooders hates convertible Mk1 Golfs and always prefers the hatchbacks. I'm fairly neutral, it was a joke!

well if im being completely honest was a tin top i was origially after :) Just this one came up at the right time. Give it a year or so and hopefully i'll have a tin top in my collection too. Although have to admit the cab is fun in this weather not that it heppens much.
