Think black and white plates are only allowed on vehicles that could have originally been fited with them. Not sure when the white/yellowplates came in, but was around the late sixties/early seventies.

Sort of in line with my preference for originality on a Golf GTI, I can't see the point in mucking around with the number plate (German looking, italics, fonts, black ones, spacing etc). Also I find it very funny that people with cheap personalised plates (you know, the ones where they need to use numbers 13 to look like a B, etc), if caught 3 times with illegal spacing, the DVLA can withdraw that plate! So, if they've paid ?400 for it, though!

Bear this in mind tho: the ANPR system should make it much easier to find a stolen car, so long as they don't change the plates. And I believe they're bringing in (on new cars) a security fixing which means its a once-only fit.

Just to clarify, number plates up to 1973 can be the black and sliver type, after that they must be the NEW style yellow and white reflective. Legally you are not allow to use the older style reflective plates with raised numbers or pressed types…so if you have old plates on your car keep them as you can use them as long as they are original. All gone mad IMO as modern number plates on a 70's car can look out of place as well.

I do have personal plate on my car, but more for investment value, the golf had a non transfereable number and not the original anyway, but when you go through the process, you are asking to retain the number, you don't own it, the DVLA are just allowing you to keep it but they can take it away if they feel you're abusing it. eg Incorrectly spaced, wrong letter type etc. they could even give you a Q plate if they wished for displaying it wrong…..that would devalue the car :banghead:

This is how i understand the law, I may be slightly out have a look on the DVLA site it's a right headache 8O

I'd echo all the comments on the club-gti forum - personally I am most scared of terrorists when they are driving cars with German plates.

In fact, I can't think of anything worse. The only way to solve it is, of course, a ?60 fine and 3 points. Well done Tony & co :y:

The main reason they want to change it and enforce it is because their electronic scanners that read number plates for issuing fines, or enforcing the london congestion charge etc. can't cope very will with non-standard lettering and non-standard spacing.

Notice this has only become a real issue since the advent of computerised numberplate reading!!

Its all a matter of revenue

People are driving slower and revenue is now down on previous years from speeding fines so the next thing to target is number plates . When you drive around today look at the miss spelt and deliberatly altered plates people are using . Get them all fined and its a lot of money .

I am not going to worry about driving my Golf about on German plates . The police have 1 million other number plates to do before they get me .

Whats 1 million x ?60.00 ???

Cheers………

I think that this was inevitable. If you get pulled by the Police now or before with weird plates then you got a producer anyway, so they have only taken it to the next level really where they can enforce it completely.

As soon as the first young child gets mowed down or major crash happens where there is a camera with a picture and the car happens to have these style of plates on and it's eligible therey'll be uproar from everyone in the UK.

My view is like most things is If its the law then you can decide to go against it, but don't come a moaning when it bites you on the arse

Oh, and no german plates for me, so I'm not affected as well  8)

i actually agree with a fine for people who miss-shape letters and numbers to form a word (most tend to be white socked ford drivers anyway ) but i don't agree with targeting german style number plates. two other major offences that the police could and have picked up on… half full washer bottles, and there is a minimum distance to be away from your car if you have been drinking. sounds daft but if mr plod wanted he could knock on any home and if you have been drinking and your car is parked near your house your can be done for drink driving !! madness. so any way government want to screw money out of us they can. bless them they need every penny to pay the drugies and imigrants who help to keep britain like it is today………..rant over. :?

When I see number plates that are incorrectly spaced or have the letters altered, it always seems really tacky! If I wanted a personal plate I think i'd have to save up and get a decent one.

I saw AR53 NAL on a porsche 911 today while I was in London (near the arsenal grounds)! Wonder who that was?

Still undecided on German style plates :?

The best plates are the ones that speak for themselves and don't need spacing or distortion to read like a cool plate. A couple of examples:

BOW1E
2 SHY

quite pricey, tho

I've seen the number plate "U2"! Now thats got to be worth a few bob. It was on a e30 bmw tourer. Must be worth many times the value of the car.
