FWD or RWD
Can someone please advise if the 1991 Gti Cabriolet was FWD or RWD also why is this important when buying new wheels ….

FWD, all golfs are except the 4WD ones

Yep, I've got wider wheels on the back of my BMW and my 200SXcrazyquiff said
some peeps put wider wheels on the back of a RWD car

RWD cars typically have a lower offset, for example ford 7 spoke RS wheels made two identical looking types one for a sierra/capri and another for the s1 rs turbo if you put the wheels from a sierra onto an fwd escort they will stick right out.
Same as BMW wheels will fit on a Golf but again the offset if different.
If you check the offset and PCD you should be able to fit pretty much any 4 x 100 wheel, check carefully the clearance with the calipers and shocks though

offset is the distance from the hub to the wheel face, I run BMW wheels on my S2 with no problem I think they are et 30 (offset ) where as normal GTI wheels are et38

Offset is the distance between the centre of the wheel, and its hub face. If its negative, it means that the centre line of the wheel is further inwards, than the hub.
