Dry Sump Systems?

Anybody got any advice on dry sump systems. Anyone ever built one or had experience of one?

Mine will be for a non Golf.

I managed to knock the bottom end out of my Land Rover this afternoon.   Got stuck in a watery hole on a site and filled the engine with water ops: . I think it got through the dip stick tube.

Basically I want to know when the engine is turned off, what stops the oil leaking past the pump into the engine if the resovoir tank is sat highter than the engine. Is it merely you have a part of the pick up pipe higher than the tank or will it just continue to syphon into the engine or do the pumps have valves in them.

I have nil experience of this type of thing.
