Think the VW Golf Diesel engine was quite an advanced and refinded performer for the time and went some way to chaging the then agricutural image diesel engines had. Diesels came as 1.5 and 1.6 and had about 50bhp - performance is similar to the 1100 petrol golf. VW also sold a diesel turbo mk1 in the final year (1983) of its production in Europe.

When that small rear light (red car) diesel pulled in to Gaydon on Sunday I was quite surprised how quiet it sounded! 8O

I cant rant on enough about mine, as you may have guessed from some topics. ops: I love the factory fitted 5th gear - the ratios are spot-on. It helps the car acheive a healthy 60+mpg on the open road! It also makes the top speed 105mph (which I can vouch for  ) instead of around 88mph for the 4 speed? (according to the '83 brochure). But the 4 speeds obviously have the same poke etc, as they have identical gear ratios - my dad owned a 4 speed and said it went like **** off a stick, but obviously revved a tad more than the 5 speed at very high speeds! They seem to have the throttle response you'd expect from a petrol car!
Considering some manufacturers are only just starting to cotton-on to the 'quiet, nippy diesel' market now, it was an advanced engine for its time! And it certainly shifts the light 845-ish kg around quite nicely thank you very much!

yes,you are right i drove back from brighton after picking up the mk1 diesel off ebay, top end without turning deaf was 70 mph,it would do 85 ok,no more though, now 5 speed with gearbox out of 1997 golf 1.9D,will drive it soon when i have dumped the crap lucas front brake calipers, the pads are half the size of my 1.5 GX and you need 3 feet to stop it. 8O

One does tend to get rather heavy-footed after driving a mk1 for years! Get in a modern car and brake…you nearly go through the windscreen! I must admit though, I've never had a 'will it stop before I hit the car in front' moment…but I don't often fly around like a GTI might…hence the larger servo!
Bert, let us know how the five speed box goes once you're up and running! And I can't wait to start with the cooking oil aswell, glad it was successful!

Well,5 speed box is exellent, tight and crisp,no noises, and 5th gear is a godsend, same ratios as the old box as far as i can tell, but the extra cog makes a huge difference.
I have put 75/90 synthetic gear oil in the box, well worth it,very smooth and gearchanges are easy.
Just the tailgate to be painted and a good polish and into storage for the winter.

Sounds good! I'm hoping to get a garage for mine, poor things outside in all weathers! I'll be respraying soon and putting some new panels on soon so would like to get a garage for it after that to keep it nicer for longer!
Post a pic before you put the diesel away for the winter! Be nice to see it again!

Right then rust proofing on the sniff (cheap)
Get a fairy liquid bottle and fill it with engine oil (used ok) squirt it into the back wheel arches from inside the boot, this will also run into the sills, when your finished park it somewhere so the exess can drip out of the sill and job done

Nice one! Cheers Bert! I'll give it a go. Why didn't Blue Peter tell us that top tip for empty washing-up liquid bottles?
