Mars Red is common because it suits the car. Both my Mk1's have been Mars Red because its a colour I like.
Saying that, Helious Blue is a fabulous colour and it's a pity they didn't make more of them.

I would love to get my mits on an Atlas Grey one - I think it really suits the car.
Helios Blue is also another fave, but I think my fave colour after Atlas Grey is the Lhasa Green which I have. The slight green tint to the windows and the green stripe interior really give it a coordinated look on the colour front andits a pretty timeless colour.
I also like the fact that the green (or petrol as VW call it) interior is unique to that colour of car so a little bit unusual).
Cheers,
Chris

Come on people… nothing looks better than a nice shiny schwartz black golf! 8)
My next choce would be Helious Blue, then atlas grey,….. not keen on green and red is common and fades like a b****!
Apparently white cars are supposed to show the "true" shape of the car according to my mate who a car designer. Golfs look good in white so this must be true

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday

There are a lot of nice 70's colours which show off the original design the best. Miami Blue, Marino Yellow, Panama Brown, Cliff Green, Ocean Blue and Lofoten Green are the best examples.
For the GTi, Mars Red and Black are the best.
Metallics do not suit the Golf at all IMO, except Ancona Blue which I love.
Cheers

i think that solid colours always look more shiny than metalic ones you cant beat a really shiny red or black car you can see your reflection in 8)

I love all the original colours from most early cars, I really like Slate grey. Some Porsches come in that colour.
If I had the money to rebuild a real early car from the shell I think I'd have it slate grey.
Also like someone said in other posts, Chudd I think?
Yellow really suits the Mk1.

I think mk1's look great in any colour. I have owned several coloured mk1's, pegasus blue, azores blue, helious blue but one of my favorites was a green GX I dont know what the colour was. It was lighter than lhasa but not really pale.
I must be obsessed with blue cars or something? I had never seen a helious one until I bought mine but I made the right choice. I love it.

I have a Mars Red Cabby and was expecting to have a pink one by the end of the first year after the paint job. the guy must have put plenty of laquer on it as it always shiney and hasn't faded one bit!!
Keep it original, solid colours are best (in GTI Red).
