Customised Videos?
For club promotion stuff I thought it would be nice to make a video of various bits of mk1 footage rolled together with a soundtrack dubbed (ha!) over the top.
Obviously there is a copyright issue involved. I've got loads of footage, but it's how you go about getting permission to use it. Does anyone know how you go about this sort of thing?
I guess there are two questions
1. Can you get permission to use old mk1 footage from videos?
2. Can you get permission to use an mp3/cd track from somewhere?
Anyone clued up on this sort of thing?
Cheers,
Drew.

I was chatting to a guy my brother knows in a pub at the weekend. He was sued ?5000 by these people for downloading/uploading music a couple of months back!

Yep, I meant a DVD as the end result, but all the footage is on VHS. I can record it into my PC and make a DVD no problem, it is the copyright I need to figure out.
Would a DVD of all mk1 footage, with a couple of 'fun' vids with an mp3 soundtrack be a driver for membership do you think folks? Peanuts to produce but quite unique….
…if we can crack the copyright and the costs involved are not prohibitive.
Cheers,
Drew.

I remember buying a unique VW book(sadly lost) which featured VWs from 1974 to 1981 and was made up of press comments from various sources, so there must a a route you can go down. I would imagine the cost involved would be very high especially if it was for resale etc, but just guessing.
Another way round it is to make your own video. Take a video recorder to VW meetings, such as Gaydon, GTI international etc. Food for thought.

I have some footage of earlier Inters at Ipswich 2003,04, I've also got some footage of a '83 Mk1 with a Audi S3 1.8 20V turbo engine at snetterton. I'd be well up for some more filmimg.
Maybe we could organise some filming out the back of a caddy on a quiet wide road. It would be great. Get as many members there as possible get a broadcast quality camera there, hey presto!!!

i would love to get a dvd of early mk1 footage but have no idea of how to get the copyrights i think you would need to approch the producer of the film/programme, i have a copy of "The cars the star" which features the mk1 GTI on video, the bbc made this so i guess i would have to ask them about coping it, i'm sure if it was for club use it would be cheeper to get the rights than if you were selling it on the high street :dontknow:

of course as said it could be easier and cheeper to hire a good quality camera get us all together and film away and add other clips which you can get permission for, VAG must have some footage of them being built etc?

I have a fair amount of footage on video or DVD. I have early footage of Mk1 on the test track, proto testing, 1977 Junior Cup GTi Series (has my car in it somewhere
), Car's The Star, VW History of the GTi and the Duke Mk1 Magic video.
I also have some cool footage of Audi Group B Quattro in action, buying guide for Mk2 Golf and VR6.
I would need to ask VW Group to copy it.
Cheers

Not sure what people think, but maybe it would be a really great idea to get hold of the episode of Top Gear (I think) with Jeremy Clarkson reviewing the Mark 1 Golf GTI…….."It's good to be back"!
Not sure how difficult it would be to get hold of that. Probably cost an arm and a leg to use.

That was one of those 'Extreme' Videos, he was driving the VW press Mk1 and compared it to his mk1 Scirocco GTI. He said it was almost "as good as an evening with Elle McPherson" and that "If this was presented to me as a new car today, I would wet myself with excitement."

i shoot and edit videos as my job and am just starting to do dvd authoring (alongside photography as you know) i'd be definately up for editing the existing bits and doing filming (obviously f.o.c.) if required!
i think as far as the copyright is concerned you would need to seek permission to use each clip individually. presuming they were all made by individual companies, then you would have to contact them all! if you need i can look into intelectual property for video a bit more but i reckon it will be a case of this.
as far as music is concerned unless you wanted popular drive time chestnuts as layla and born to be wild etc. i'm sure with a circulation of people as wide as ours we could find an assortment up and coming musicians to let us use their material without charge. then say listen to some and pick a couple of goers? the amount good of bands and music producers all hungry for a break about should be easy to get some good stuff for nowt!
of course one way of doing it would be to produce something as a personal archive and just say share it round on the quiet.
if you need me you know where i am

As someone else suggested, maybe we should look into renting a disused airfield for a day, get someone setup in the back of a caddy with a decent quality camera and get a good selection of Mk1's for a days filming and some good stills shots
The music is a trickier one as anything mainstream is likely to cost, but as already suggested maybe the way to go is with a new band - finding a good one could be tricky though…..

Good idea, but I'm a bit wary of turing out one of those dodgy ClubGTI/FHM/Men & Motors style chav vids  . Random pictures of cars with music overdubbed doesn't do much for me
. Need to give it a bit of content (voiceover, subtitles) maybe giving info on model of mk1 and history etc? Would be really good if we could use some classic, historic clips such as Rajan mentioned.
Incidental music would be good to use here and there, but when I'm watching nice cars I much prefer to hear the actaully engine, revs, tyre squeal etc not a music track. Also depends on what sort of music, we all having differing taste. Last thing I'd want is Eric Clapton & Layla whilst I'm driving
I and another forum member (Boogaloo) play in a Reggae/Dub band. We play mainly original music and are always up for this sort of thing, but might not be the sort of thing people want? We have our own recordring eqipument and and could make up a CD. I could even knock up a few tunes especially for it?
Cheers

Or one of the other famous UK circuits?
With regards to git mentioning he edits videos for a job, I own a broadcast quality 3CCD camera (The BBC had 5000 of these). I have produced a few DVD's featuing animated menu's using Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro on my Apple computer.
If using historic footage from the archives mentioned by Drew and Rajan we will have to gain permission first. Music will be less of a problem as a good narration and engine sound bites would probably entertiain most enthusiasts. That said a friend of mine would be happy to supply some quality music. He has recently recorded for a new Red Bull DVD, 'Underwraps'.
