The Mk1 Golf Owners' Club does not require ownership of a Mk1 Golf   ? I would have thought the forum is open to all e.g. potential owners, but to be a member you would have to actually own one.

To maintain a register of MK 1 Golf GTIs and other derivatives of the mark.
I would use the wording, "To maintain a register of MK1 Golf and other derivatives of the mark". Less focus on the GTi as the registers are open to all Golfs.

I would define "Golf" at the start so you don't have to repeat "all of its derivatives" and spell out the derivatives catered for, Golf, Jetta, Caddy, Cab, Scirocco or what?

Should the "Objectives" include:
- obtain discounts on parts and services (e.g. insurance)
- hold regular national and regional meets to promote the club and interaction of its members

Just a few thoughts. Nice one  :y:

Cheers
Rajan

Good work drew! Fair comments Rajan but would say you should be able to join even if you don't own a Golf.

Fair comments Rajan but would say you should be able to join even if you don't own a Golf.

My thoughts were that you could join the club without owning a Golf for a number of reasons

A. You might be too young to own one
B. You might want to join up and learn about the Golf before buying one
C. You might be an enthusiast who wants to come along but who can't buy a Mk1 at the moment for various reasons, but wants to support the 'cause'.

Your thoughts people?

Cheers,

Drew.

And…

D. What happens if you are a member and you sell the Golf? Do you have to 'resign' from the club.

I agree with Drew as above…….it is SUPPORT for the Club!
When I lost my first Golf I spent a couple of 'lost' years, playing with a Scirrocco and a Passat (and other things)…..if I'd seen a club like this then, it would have kicked my backside into gear to do something about getting another one sooner!

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

I am fine with it too. It is just the title "Owners' Club" implies you have to own one. More of an "Enthusiasts' Club"?

To me an 'owners' club implies….

Current owners
People who would like to own one
People who have owned one

After all, if you have owned a Mk1, you're tainted for life! It's a bit like the Hotel California, you can check out, but you can never leave!

I think in reality not many non-owners would join anyway. As I recall the benefits of membership would be:

- free entry to Gaydon (but only with a Mk1, non Mk1s have to park outside which is free anyway)
- parts and insurance discounts (only useful if you own one)
- car sticker / key fob (only useful if you own one)
- abililty to sell stuff in the "For Sale" section (only useful if non-owner members could see potential cars for sale or is this free anyway? Can non-members post in the "Wanted" section for a Mk1?)

Everything else is free to the public.

My Dad's just gotten onto broadband and he has owned several Mk1s years ago.  I'm going to get him to try and come here because he has loads of useful information and tips on the Mk1 Golf - even though its been years since he owned one.  He borrows mine regularly and I'm pretty sure he'd get loads out of coming here - simply by helping other folks out…

I agree on the not having to own a Mk1 to join approach.

I belong to several other clubs for cars I was thinking about buying and its often the starting point for me when researching info on a potential purchase. I know its not the case here but some clubs have "cars for sale" lists, of members cars which members gets first dibs on, and they are invariably the better examples of the marque.

Maybe this is not the place to discuss this, and I can't remember if its covered in the AGM, but if technically possible it might be good to have a members only accessible for sale section where all cars and parts are advertised exculsively for a faew days before automatically getting posted on the public for sale section?

This would be another incentive to join as you would get first crack at any good cars / parts that came up?

Just a thought.

At the AGM it was only agreed members would not have to pay the ?5 charge for selling cars. Access to the classified sections would still be free to non-members.

Sure, don't get me wrong I am not suggesting we restrict viewing access to the classifieds, just that maybe "publication" to the public classifieds be delayed by a day or so after submission.

In that initial day or so the ads are only visible in a members classified area or "new items for sale" type area.

Anyway, this is a bit off topic, so I'll post any further follow up in the website suggestions area  :)

I think it is a good ideas Chris. It would bring some benefit to join for non-owners.
