The problem is the bit in between washing the vinegar off and painting it - it will rust again, in the gap! Bilt Hamber and others do similar products but its a phosphorous-based acid (or something like that) and it coats the steel with a protective film during the chemical process which removes rust, but is overpaintable. Or something like that.
Can't beat vinegar on price though!

well worth a go, just make sure u paint straight away and clear coat bare metal pieces

with regards to the bilt hamber product ive got some of the deox gel and must say it does the trick...
