Car haulage companies...

Hi there, I'm looking at SORN declared golfs around the country and need to know whether it would be best to loan a flat back truck to get it towed to my house or to get a haulage company to bring it.

Anyone had experience in this and know how much it would cost?

Thanks for the help!

Cheapest way would be to hire a transit and trailer - or borrow from someone.

Usually transport companies are quite expensive.

I think trailer hire around here (NW) is ?37.50 for the weekend, they get booked up though. Its ?25 for the first day and ?12.50 for subsequent days. Recovery/transportation companies typically charge ?1/mile or thereabouts.

Of course, the cheapest way is to get public transport there, and risk driving it back. And if it breaks down on the way home, call the AA. But thats a bit dodgy. Some recovery companies will make a check to see if the car is taxed. But they don't check if its dark.

For only 30 quid or so I think I'll just be safe!

I got a number to ring tommorow and hopefully will get it for about 30 quid!

Most of the recovery type places will not carry an un-taxed car either.
I had trouble finding someone to carry mine to and from the paint shop…

Trailer will be the best way if you have something to pull it.

If you hire a trailer, you MUST tell your insurance company. If you have an accident with the trailer on the back and they don't know YOU ARE NOT COVERED. They may ask for an extra premium for that period of use - just pay it, it isn't worth the aggro. Take it from a voice of experience. :banghead:

As for costs of transport… well, my GTi is being brought up from Fleet in Hampshire to Weedon, Northants this Thursday for ?180. Sounds like a lot, but factor in the following:

  1. Petrol to go and get it (you can pretty much add half as much again for when you are towing)
  2. Hire of trailer
  3. Time and aggro

Its point 3 that is the major one - I just tell someone where the car is and they collect it, strap it down, drive the miles and deposit it at the other end.

If you do go for the transport option, make sure they are insured - a lot of the Ebay ones aren't. I do recommend   www.paulridley.co.uk as he's been brilliant for me and a couple of mates.

Hope that helps

NO Golfs at present!!!!:-(

it can be cheeper to go and hire a trailer or a transit(or similar) flat bed transporter. Depending on if you can find one to hire - alot of hire companies dont keep these or have them on long term loan.
I transport classic cars around the uk and europe most of the cars i work with are high value or very rare, so we used covered trucks that are well spec'd with fully trainned drivers. This always seems an expensive way but offers peace of mind to the owners.
Vick_b is right and that is a very fair price when you factor in your time etc.
