I wouldn't worry too much, it's not as if 'The Sun' is an informed source of information on cars… or anything for that matter.
You could say the same about 20-30 year hatchbacks, doesn't sound very cool does it?
At the end of the day as long as you are having a good time and not causing harm to anyone, I don't see why you should worry what anybody else thinks!
I had a cabriolet for three years and put up with all the hairdresser comments, but it was always ladies in my circle of friends who wanted a ride…
Cheers,
Drew.

Whenever I'm driving if I go anywhere with friends, everyone piles into various corsas, astras and other such vehicles, but no one ever wants to come in the MK 1 unless they have to

Glad most are of the same opionon as me - i really don't care what ppl think bout my car, i love it!
Nothing better than seein a corsa or astra or any non ac car on a boiling hot day in a traffic jam full of ppl sweating when i have my roof down enjoying the nice day!

Hmm divided on this one. I feel that most cabbys ARE for girls, Z3, 306, chavalier(yes ther is!) Mercs blah blah blah, But MK1s are BIG BOYS TOYS Same as TVR, Caterham 7, etc and you dont see girls in kit cars do you?
all the Sun is good for is the TV listing!

A woman owned it before me and admitted that is why she was sellin it after just 2 weeks!

I can see where they are going with the micra and corsa convertible ideas, they are probably aimed more at the female market, but to have such a strong negative view of men driving convertibles sounds to me like they are either taking that view in order to give some kind of substance to their otherwise pointless article or they have far too much time on their hands! I mean really, who is that bothered what other people drive, that you would try to insult someone over the issue!? :dontknow:

I'll have you know that I can parallel park my mk1 cab with ease!
Don't actually think it matters as long as you're enjoying the drive - having said that, my 6' tall boyfriend looks a tad silly with his head sticking out the top when the roof's down….
If you're shorter (not just girls obviously!) you get that nice cocoon of warm air when you have the roof down on a cold day!

So I regard the Cabriolet as a girl car, but in the context of what it was in it's new car days.
Now that these things can be time-stamped in terms of decades instead of years, it takes a lot of work to keep them running. Most ladies that like the "girliness" of the car won't put up with the repairs.
I don't care if girls poke fun of the car - most like gawking at it when the top is down. But any REAL man would know what it takes to keep these cars running.

I think the worst offenders are things like the Tigra, 206, Mirca type cars, These all have a really girlyness to them. A friend of my mum and dads has just bought a 206 CC and he does look silly (imo) as it just doesn't suit a bloke, the car is just too cute looking!?
I think the mk1 cabby is along the lines of those older convertables such as Morgan's MGs etc which are enjoyed by both sexes and look good regardless of who is driving it.
I would like to try one at some point, i've been keeping an eye out for a cheep all white cabby pre 88, so with small bumpers. I think that would look good on my drive

I agree with all those along the lines of I couldn't give a flying you know what about what people think about a 35yr old man driving a 17 yr old Golf GTI cabriolet…
Any doubters soon change their mind on a day with even a hint of sun, hood down, heater on, country road and foot down - best thing I ever did when splitting from my former girlfriend was to keep my mk1 GTi Cab and let her have the then 2 yr old mk 3 16v Golf GTi…
All my friends thought I was mad and interestingly mines worth a whole lot more now than the 16valver - not that I would ever sell the blue bathtub ;-)
