Apple BAAAD! Apple GOOOOOD!

Firstly the bad, My 18 month old Macbook Pro shut its self down for no reason yesterday and then again today (as if the batt was totally dead!). Turned the computer over to check the battery, to find the metal casing blistering!?!  it now looks like this and the computer doesn't recognise its connected anymore:

(this isnt my actual macbook pro but its exactly the same problem)

Now the good, I phoned apple to find out what to do as Im out of the original warranty. The bloke at apple went away for a few mins and when he came back said that no1 there had ever heard of this problem before (thats total crap coz before phoning i had read over 30 web pages about this exact problem including 1 on the apple uk site.). Because they'd never had a macbook pro battery blister the techs want it to test for future development so they will send me a new one with a courier asap, totally free!! they'll even arrange for the courier to collect my old batt and take it for testing!

So I was told a total pack of lies but ive got a ?70 batt for nothing!! Im happy!! :D

Its deffo alot better than ive had from them in the past! before getting the macbook pro i had an ibook which, after 2 years of daily use just stopped working!! turned out the main board? (i always thought it was called the motherboard) had died and would probably cost ?700+ to repair. phoned apple to complain as i didnt think it right that a ?1200 computer was only good for 2 years and what would they do about it! got told its older than 12months so its nothing to do with apple!

Yeah it is called a motherboard but Apple like to make up their own language, usually as they go along!
Yeah once the warranty runs out most companies either dont wanna know or they charge you an arm and a leg. I know HP only cover their batteries for 6 months

I had a battery fail on my Mac Book  - replaced for free.  They had a spate of these - depends on the serial number of the machine - think they had a batch of bad batteries

Bert

you could kind of expect that to happen when you put a laptop on a hot plate.

work this one out, the battery that had blistered has un bilstered!! it sits totally flat again!?!

That'll be the logic board on your ibook.

Mine went 2 weeks after I got it - luckily fixed for free. I think it's rubbish that Apple make you pay ?130 for 3 years extended warranty. It's like they don't really have the faith themselves that products will make it that far!

Eventually my ibook died due to GPU heatsink failure - apparently a common problem but not something apple will do anything about.

I love Apple's computers to bits but I think they're just the same as any company, although they look a bit swankier - they'll just as soon rip you off as anyone else - they even tried to charge me for a support phonecall once…

At least you got yours sorted though dude!

Apparently apple felt the problems weren't causing any physical danger to people so simply extended the warranty on batteries for an extra 12 months but didnt bother telling anyone. It took me ALOT of digging and reading other forums to actually find that page on the apple site!!

Hmm, will see if they change their tune once they get the first lawsuit from some poor sod with half a battery melted on to his face…

the info on the apple site is a bit miss leading too! it tells you to contact your local apple retailer and book it in to have the batt swapped over. but when I phoned my local retailer they knew nothing about any extended warranty or battery swaps and say i had to take it up with apple directly! :dontknow:

That's rubbish, not surprising though.

I think that's why it ticks me off so much, Apple has this really smarmy attitude about "Oh we're so cool and everything works so well blah blah blah" but when something goes wrong they're just as useless as everyone else.
