Alloy refurb.

Any body used nitro mors or similar to strip paint & lacquer off alloy wheels ?

I might also have them shot blasted  any thoughts on either methord.

I'm thinking of refurbing the Snowflakes myself probably painting them in white & gunmetal or perhaps white/ polished alloy.

Never heared of nitro mors. So cant comment on that. I know a few people that have had their wheels blasted right back down. And they've come up a treat. It'd be interesring to see other peoples opinions as I'm hoping to do my own wheels soon. :-) Also to you or anyone else who reads this….but can alloy be powder coated?

I've used Nitro-Mors to strip fresh paint off a wheel after it reacted. For the time and effort involved in doing a full set of wheels and then still having to sand them to prep I'd suggest just sending them off to be blasted is the best option.

Just thought I'd have a go myself maybe not a good idea I know.

A mate of mine tried it. Did work ok but as many spokes in his wheels took forever to do properly.

You can buy a mini blaster off machine mart or e bay if youv'e got a good compressor.

I think they use aluminium oxide as the media.

If theres curbing then they need putting straight plus any lumps missing wlelding etc.
So really fella depends on how bad they are.
You could find a blaster  and get them to blast them and get them powder coated instead of painted?

just looking into this for a set of wheels i have, seems that the best thing to use is soda blasting which wont pit the metal, do a search lots of info about, if you have a big enough compressor then you can make your own http://www.aircooledtech.com/tools-on-the-cheap/soda_blaster/

That soda blasting looks quite impressive

I've done a few sets of my own wheels, nitro mors, wire brush and a polishing mop set. It is hard work tho..

Update.

Had a few hrs this evening with the Nitro Mors coated the wheel 3 times then scraped /wire brushed etc takes a fair bit of time approx 1hr per coat on the Snowflakes.

Probably need a forth coat the only awkward bit is getting between the smaller gaps, luckily no kerbing etc on all 5 wheels.

Going to persevere for a bit (only because the local blasters are movng factories this next week)

what primers etc did you use ? I'm thinking of matt white and grey with lacquer top coat I think the wheels could be hard to mask for a polished alloy/white finish.

The soda blaster looks good wonder how good on a painted surface?

I started using Halfrauds own stuff, but it proper guff compared to Holtsif you can find it its well worth it, and even if you have to go to halfrauds look at the U-Pol gear, it's well worth the extra pennies. 

Tempted myself to have a bash at the soda blasting, might have a try on the weekend.

Good luck finding the baking soda   could only find little tins at the supemarkets  

Update.

Took 6 coats of Nitro Mors to finally get to bare metal gave the wheel a good wire brushing & a rub down with panel wipe.

Applied a coat of etching to get the alloy ready for priming then 3 coats of primer hopefully I'll get the top coats on in the morning.

All being well I'll put a couple of picies on  over the weekend.

Photos taken in sequence of work carried out so far could do with a few opinions please before I do them all.

If the wheels are going to be laquered/clear coated .and you don"t have compessor  and spraygun,..a 2K paint aerosol will be harder wearing,than normal air drying 1K paint ……2K paint is activated by a chemical hardner to cure/dry it. You can get it in aerosol cans,but once activated it will only last up to 24 hours or so,before it goes hard in the can. One can, about £10, should just about do two wheels,just..

Looks great fella. What happens with solvent based strippers is that the solvent evaporates before the stripper works effectively so you need a few coats. A trick is to cover with cling film to stop the solvents evaporating.
Another trick is caustic soda, they use it in door stripping etc.
Needs to be on heat though for top results. So you need a tank big enough to take the wheel or at least half at a time. Warning caustic soda can burn you seriously…
