debs.  agree with you on the community work idea. but most people are unwilling to work in a job they consider to be demining. it's a shift in what people are willing to do for money thats the problem and the amount of money they are willing to do it for. i would rather work in the most degrading job going if it means i don't have to take money from the government but i fear i may be in a minority.

But that's my point. People who want to work for their money would be glad to do most things rather than be seen scrounging.

As a Teaching Assistant in a Secondary school I work hard and get rubbish pay for what I do. I'm on holiday this week, and I can see why it might be tempting for some people to take the option of 'being paid to stop home'. That temptation wouldn't be there if people knew they had to do whatever community work they were put onto if they were on the dole.

or they would move from being on the dole to stealing for a living. there is always an easier option. and the lazy people will always take it.

Fair point, hadn't thought of that, but I can see you could be right.

this then brings in another debate on how to deal with criminals which would eventually move back round to the same place as this one. make them work for there living.

You have my sympathy, My wife is a teacher and that does bring you in to contact with some of the worst society has to offer, without the protection that the police enjoy. Give this teachers blog a read it is brilliantly funny but very true at the same time.

Well I'm pleased that at least my three lads are happy to work for their living. Middle one just had a few weeks out of work when a few got laid off where he was working.

While he was searching for work we supported him (lives with us - didn't expect rent/food money). He had no spare money so basically didn't spend any money. Didn't actually occur to any of us for him to go on the dole!

Yeah, my hubby is a teacher too. I think teachers get a worse time than the TAs do.

I'm going to check that blog out now. Ta!

no to follow one mans ideas is a mistake. there are some good ideas here which can do alot for prevention and for reabilitation of offenders but there are also some terrible things that have happened during his time as sheriff which although they have never been proved do point towards absolute power corrupting.

inmates working for the community is a very good idea though.
