As someone thats probably going to start a full restore at the end of the year maybe beginning of next year i would find an Indepth photo log of whats suppose to be were a great reference tool.
As you know when a car has had a few owners in its life when things get fixed bits often get left off Or go missing.
So a photo file of an original GTI showing enginebay with correct wiring clips etc and indepth interior bit photos would be a great help. maybe even photos of correct clips screw etc even.
As an example Ive only just seen photos of the front seatbelt reals been housed in a plastic liner i suppoose it is too stop dust getting into it. My cars never had since i bought it so i never knew they were suppose to be there.
maybe many closeup photos of a concours car inside and out so someone that wants to get theres back to how it was and should be can see whats missing or in the wrong place.
(my tailgate stickers under the bonnet for example 8O :? im guessing because someone put the earlier tailgate on the car  )

Geoff.
I know what you mean but it's so difficult because every car seems to be slightly different. If you copy just one car you might not be getting the full picture.
I think your best bet is to look as many other cars as possible, preferably armed with a camera and decide which one's right!
Peter.

try this - http://195.137.115.206/pics/gallery.asp
It was the link to the page of the photos posted from the Gaydon meet. There's pics of plenty of cars but in particular the engine bay of the two concours black Campaigns
Hope it helps!
Cheers

I was not really meening every single part but if someone is VERY clued up on whats original and were its suppose to be then i think it would be worth sharing.
As this would help people that want to restore it and keep things original if someone knows what is 100% original then i think it would be worth having as maybe a reference section of the forum/club for anyone to refer to when restoring.
Im sure the concours cars have near everything correct and there owners could share with us there journey to getting it too original or what is were with a few well chosen pictures of different parts of the car.
Engine bay big pic, interior, boot, pictures of the hidden stickers, maybe hidden bits behind panels when they were restoring that may have been removed over time by previous owners of your car and so on.
I would hate to have gone to lengths of a full restore then suddenly found i did something really wrong that will cost a fortune to correct.

Yo Geoff
…I got a Riley Elf Mk2 too (with 1071 "S", discs, twin tanks, etc). As you can guess its not original but my GTI is (not a Campaign tho..its an April 1982 1600 which I've had since new).
If yours is a Campaign, I probably can't help you much but if yours is around 1981- 1982 (series 2 new dash 1600) then I can go steal my daughter's Boyfriend's mother's brother's digital camera (maybe I should buy my own !) and digitise what you need.. Post your wants and like hairy, dubboy, etc maybe I can help out. The only extras my GTI has is a LH mirror and those "Lokari" front wheel arch shields (Campaigns, I believe, came with factory shields).
Cheers

Thanks.
A few questions you maybe able to answer for me.
1: the underbonnet rubber bonnet supports on the wing area and next to the scuttle panel what are the original locations as im sure mine are in the wrong places.
2: If you know the location of the stickers as mine are in the wrong places thanks to a pianter that removed them as asked but then got there locations mixed up.
3: Is there a clip that hold the water bottle pipe to the strut area as there like a lump there that looks like it should hold a clip?
4:
Theres a bracket onto the scuttle panel area behind the engine, the silver one in the centre of the picture, Is that normally there as mine does not have one? If so whats it hold.
Thanks guys.
Geoff.

Geoff,
1 - I think I know what you are on about , they should be next to the rubber seal that runs the length of the scuttle. I imgine they are to stop hot engine air getting to the fresh air intake.
2 - which stickers do you need to know about? The side stripes or the warning etc stickers?
3 and 4 - pass!
btw this is mk1matt off talkaudio… I'll send you a pm tonight.

In answer to 3, I assume you mean the wash/wipe water bottle. If so there should be a plastic clip to hold the piping. This should clip into the inner wing just ahead of the suspension turret.
In answer to 4 I would also say that it is the ignition coil holder. Is there no ignition coil fitted at the moment?
Cheers

1: theres two rubbers like wedge shapped thicker at one end than the other. about an inch long. I think you could be correct meening mine are in the wrong place. LOL. Theres also two smaller L shaped ones i think fit a slight indent in the bonnet i think there in the right place though.
2: Theres a yellow warning sticker that says something about electric shock under the bonnet. Mine as you can guess was just slapped back on after painting mine on the slam panel that i knows the wrong place for it. As its bigger than the panel. I think its probably goes on the bonnet somewere.
Theres also a sticker for the boot lid i think thats also just been put on the slam panel any idea were on the boot lid it belongs?
3… I think the other guy has answered this one, Im missing the clip. there seems a lump halfway up the wheel arch maybe its a half broken clip.
4… Arr my coil brackets upside down. LOL that answers that one LOL.
Thanks guys
Geoff.

Yo Geoff
Sorry this is a bit late::my pc crashed as I was replying Tues nite. Anyways….
1) There are 4 bolts holding the top of the wing. The rubber support (actually the bonnet "Guide Piece" 171 823 493 makes sure the bonnet fits in the gap!) goes just to rear of the third bolt from the front. Each bolt sits on a rectangular doubler about 1" wide and 1.5" long. The Guide Piece is fixed immediately to the rear of this doubler plate.
There should also be a short sponge seal (171 819 517 A) that goes at each end of the long rubber seal that cuts across the compartment that houses the wiper motor. These seals are similar to black sponge pipe lagging (my car has two similar spongeybobsmartypants that are glued on the tailgate to stop the parcel shelf from zapping every which way.)
Methinks the other guys responses re 2) 3) and 4) are good
Cheers

Geoff - another apology for length of time to reply!
Stickers: the wanring one for ignition coil does indeed go on the underside of the bonnet. I don't know if it has been taken off at some point on the car I have now so best someone with a guaranteed original car does you a picture.
The other yellow sticker does go on the hatch. As you open the hatch it should be on the bottom, to the right of the lock.
