I'm in need of a garage to have a look at my engine,
I had a engine put in by an apparent top vw garage, after months of waiting I got the car back not running correctly and has pretty much been sat up ever since (5 years or so) I've tried to start it to no avail ok just need someone who is capable to have a look and either get it running or let me know the engine as I expect is a bag of .if anyone can help me in the bristol southwest area I would appreciate it greatly thanks also if this makes sense to anyone can you please let me know what combination it is but I was told it's top 1.8 16v mk2 and bottom 2l 8v mk3 I have no idea what parts I need i.e. mk2 or mk3 starter motor ect 20180820_181751.jpg   20180820_181845.jpg

Welcome along.

richyhill might be able to recommend a garage as he's in that area.

Its definitely not a 16v top end on it tho. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Hope it all gets sorted

That does look like a 2.0l mk3 golf bottom end with a Mk2 1.8 head running digifant fuel injection system.

There will be a engine code just below cyinder 3 spark plug on the engine block and that should tell you what engine block is in there.

What parts do you need as most service bits are the same for the engine.

I would also start soaking those rocker cover studs as they look rather rusty….

That cam belt looks like it’s seen better days, I would recommend fitting a new one and new cam belt tensioner before starting the car.

hi Mark thanks you also for your knowledge it's been hard trying explain to people exactly what is in the car and tips before a start.i have ordered the belts today I need to order a starter motor first as it will just make a single click nothing else I've rocked it in gear done the hammer trick but nothing so calling it a day with that one but hopefully now will be alot easier to determine which one I need, then nobody knows what else I may need excited but slightly scared.
thanks again, clive

I would remove the starter motor and have a look at it, see if you can turn the shaft by hand and then I would connect it directly to a car battery to check if it's ok in case the problem is with the car wiring or connection from the car battery. There is a few guides etc on testing a starter motor on YouTube etc…

Have you used these people and would you recommended them? I need a little welding on my Mk1 Scirocco and wondering if there work was any good?

Tom done the 20vt conversion on my Mk1 cabby his work is top draw
He also built my 1.8t ibiza custom sidewinder with a gtx2867r making 411 bhp also done my roll cage converted it to a 6 speed mk5 Gti box lsd forged engines on both cars his welding is fantastic
Honesty he is a proper nice humble bloke to deal with

after alot of headache we've determined the engine is  abit sicky or something to do with compression as it turns over with no plugs in but when in? it seems like it's a strip down job and for the time and effort I've decided to go for a engine swap.
I've been looking into the 1.8 20v turbo but undecided which engine code to go for performance wise and ease if fitment (if any different from each other) or if there is any other engine that's easy to fit and similar performance wise I would appreciate any advice, also would it be better to say get a full mk4 gti turbo or buy separately, thanks in advance for any advice

Don’t go for a golf Gti 1.8t yeah they have the big port head but I’m running 400 bhp on a stock small port head
The ecu’s are so basic and hardly anyone wants to tune them any more
Ideally you need to be running a me7.5 ecu set up so bam engine code or amk I think
Best one to get ideally is a 225 Audi TT set up or a Leon Cupra r with the ko4 set up rather than the ko3 golf easy 280 bhp
