The dreaded fuel filler neck rot

I've got rust all round the inside of the filler neck and a hint of a hole - I can get the part from German and Swedish, I believe, but have no idea what replacing it entails. Is it the kind of job I can entrust to anyone, or do I need a VW specialist and great wads of cash? It's a 1990 Cabriolet, btw.

Fairly simple job I think - no need to remove the tank or rear axle. Not sure on the technicalities, but as long as you're happy to have a crack, it shouldn't cost you much more than 50 quid…

Easy job!  I have ONE filler neck left at the mo and they are ?30 +p+p.

Make sure tank is near empty (belown top of red)
Remove filler cap
Remove three screws behind cap
Remove 10mm bolt in wheel arch
Undo jubillee clip at the bottom
Remove filler neck
Assess body corrosion and repair
Reassembly is the reversal of removal (to coin a phrase   )

Is this filler neck for the cab though or a normal one. I've heard the normal ones will fit but are just slightly out at the cap end is this true. Need to do this job soon, but didn't really want to spend the sort of money people want for a cab neck. (Late cab that is)

I brought a standard filler neck and fitted it sucessfully to my cab. I seem to remember it was about 30mm shorter, but the flexi hose that connects it to the tank reached easily as the normal filler neck goes a long way into it, the replacement one just doesn't go quite as far into it, but still enough to be safe.

It seemed ok at the cap end to me.
