Which fuel pumps for 16v engine conversion?
Lift pump
Inline pump
There's also this lift pump which may be more suitable instead, where would the sender go on it though?:

Cheers in advance, the quicker you answer these the better, auctions end soon!

As I currently understand things:
- The Mk2 GTI lift pump as a unit, doesn't fit into the Mk1 tank because the top access hole is a different size (unsure??)
- The Mk2 high pressure pump (comes after the lift pump) in theory would work, but its combined with the accumulator and filter in a cradle, and this doesn't fit underneath the Mk1 (the 2 cars are substantially different, underbody. But you could take the pump out, make new longer lines, and mount things in different positions to make it all work.
So you'd be better off seeking the Mk1 late cabby lift pump and any Mk1 GTI electric fuel pump; or if its a hatchback or early (pre 1985) cabby, a hatchback GTI tank etc.

Correct that there just is not enough room to mount the Mk2 fuel pump assembly on a Mk1, but you can not remove the pump and run it in-line either. The Mk1 pumps have a hose nipple for the feed side where as the Mk2 only has an open end with a screen (filter if you like) slid over it. The Mk 2 pump is surrounded by fuel where it sits in the reservoir (black tank under the car) and just draws it in that way. If you were to remove it there would be no way to attach it to a fueling system.
I would say the two options are either buying a GTi tank with the gravity feed or use the Cabby transferpump (have been told that the Mk2 Polo transferpumps are a direct fit also.

Cheers for the replies lads, as you say there doesn't seem to be a lot of info on this type of conversion. Would this in-tank one be a correct fit?

I'd strongly recommend getting the entire in-tank pump, sender and fittings etc as one unit, which can be swapped and fitted into your tank. If you simply bought that, you'd need to arrange electrical connections (very near fuel) and sort out the petrol pipes going through the existing sender top plate, etc which would be difficult to do neatly.
