Which Fuel??
This will probably seem like a strange question but I have forgotten which grade of fuel my 83 unmodfied 1800 Camapign engine will run on. The tank still contains 4 Star which was still readily available six yrs ago when I last ran it. LRP is also becoming quite scarce round here, but I need to know what will be best. My modified SMART CAR and Galaxy 2.8 24v usually need to run on OPTIMAX, will this be okay ? I can remeber all the other Vws I owned could run on Unleaded, even the early 70s ones…..

2001 Galaxy 2.8 24v (VW V6)
2004 Smart Fortwo (with 50% power boost)

Drain the fuel in the tank if it has sat there a while as it will have degraded causing poor running.

fuel
according to the guy who refurbed my head for me you can run all the mk1 engines on unleaded 98 ron fuel as the valve seats that were fitted were up to the job but the timing may need a little tweaking

If it's leaded fuel then it'll be fine to run. These fuels last for years. Sadly the same isn't true of the modern fuels which loose octane contant quickly.
