what should i look for?

hi all,

going to check the golf on the weekend andn the plan is to try and to get it running.  it hasn't been turned over in a good few years so what are the things that i should be looking for?

obviously will need to check that it truns, there is a spark and fuel getting to the injectors but if it doesn't want to go, what things should i check for.

also, a bit of a dumb question, but where abouts is the fuel pump and is it possible to run without an accumulator.  (not full time but the one on there at the moment looks a bit hagged  .

thanks for any help.

Unsure if its possible to run without the accumulator. If you did, you'd need to connect up fuel lines of different connections - so may as well replace the accumulator, rather than bypass, if its unserviceable.

If its a good few years, I'd be tempted to do an oil, oil filter, fuel filter and spark plug change; then flush the fuel system as best you can (disconnect the return line from the tank, maybe?) then also remove the hose from the tank to the fuel pump and look at/clean up the microfilter there too. Then put plenty of fresh fuel in, eg 2x 5l portable cans of it.

Then fully charge the battery, disconnect the ignition coil and disable the fuel filter; and spin the engine for a good 30 secs 2-3 times. Then connect the coil and fuel pump again and try start it.

What model is it, I'm assuming GTI if you mention the accumulator? If so, the fuel pump is to the right of the fuel tank, ie just in front of the right rear wheel.

cheers for the reply.  yes, it is a GTI.

wasn't planning on actually running without the accumulator, only just to see if it starts.  will get one in time. only i would not be able to get one in time for sunday now.

will try those things and report back on sunday evening/monday.

as paul said, but take the rocker cover off when you put the oil in to run it over the top of the cam. i'd be tempted to do an oil change and filter very shortly after too.
