VW Golf Mk1 Tin Top 1980, Fuel flow issue from tank?

Hi Peeps,

Can anyone tell me why when i disconnect the short rubber hose going from fuel tank to fuel pump, I get a couple of drops of fuel come out? I have put in approx 20 litres now and was kind of expecting the fuel to fly out once I disconnected the pipe.

When I look into the tank from under the rear seat (fuel gauge sender hole) I see what I think is a baffle, can anyone let me know what I am looking at, it looks like a square contraption with a circle/plug in the middle. I also see what looks like a pipe heading into the contraption coming from the outlet discussed earlier.

I found a couple of pics on another site, which may help with my question.





Maybe I am looking at the wrong thing, but how can I get the fuel to flow freely from the tank? Is it as simple as proding a coat-hanger or a bristled flexible pipe cleaner up the outlet?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks for the response. But I have had a look in the fuel tank and looks fine. no rust bits floating about or at the bottom. The fuel filler neck is new, so must have been replaced at some stage. I changed the fuel pump as when I initially disconnected the old pump, there was this tar like substance in the pipe between the tank and the pump!

Like the rag top's that have the fuel pickup device attached to the sender, do the tin top's have some type of filter/reservoir within the tank or is it a straight exit?

The tin tops have a gauze filter. Its the round bit in the centre of the black square thingy in your pic. You can yank it out with a hook made from a coat hanger etc.

The fuel should flow out under gravity or if the cap is still on under pressure  8O

There doesn't look like there is a lot of ful in the tank, try filling above the black square thingy :dontknow:

I made a hook out of a coat hanger and I tried pulling on the round plug in the middle of the square thing and it will not budge.. How much pulling force do I need to apply here? Can I literally expect it to pop right off? Also this gauze filter is it attached to the round plug?

Does anyone happen to have a photo of this filter?

Yes it just pulls out, they are quite firmly fitted and need a tug 8O . The round plug is the filter, it fits in the 4 slots you can see. Perhaps its stuck with the stuff that you found in the pipes?

Sorted!! pulled out the filter after threading some wire thru. Filter was completely rusted, after 10 mins of wire brush outer & scotch pad inner, I jet washed the filter, dried and reinserted…

Turned the key and car started, 1st time in over 5 years from the looks of the paper work!
