Smelly

I have a slight smell of fuel around my car even after its stopped running. I thought it was running rich but I've had it tuned. Do these cars leak fuel near the rear and if so how do you find a leak?
I know that you dont use a match before that suggestion comes in.

DJ,

there is a number of places to check for fuel smells.

Check the seal around the sender unit on tp of the tank accessed through the plate under the rear seat.

Check the condition of the beather hoses and the trumpet type overflow at the back of the tank.  This can drip fuel.

Check the condition of the braided hoses around the fuel pump and accumulator.

Check the condition of the fuel supply and return lines - corrosion is often a problem.

There are a number of posts around these subjects on the old forum.

Dj - I posted recently about a problem I had a while ago.

I used to have a fuel smell when driving and when brimming tank completely full, petrol would drip on the floor under the back of the car for 20 mins or so.

Cut a long story short, turned out to be the O-ring under the fuel tank sender unit had gone. Replacing this sorted all the problems - both leak and smell!

I've got a fuel leak on the pipe near to the passenger door, can this be soldered or does the complete fuel line need replacing?

Do you mean under the car ?  Brake lines run on the passenger side - fuel lines are on the drivers side (RHD cars of course !)

If you mean in front of the passenger door (ie, bulkhead area) then it could be the end section of a fuel line. Could be a flexi hose or a loose union (doubt the latter though).

No way should you solder a fuel (or brake) line. A quick way to set fire to your car !!!

If it's a brake line then replacing it is an easy job. Replacing a fuel line is a lot of work. You may be able to cut the old line below the leak (with tube cutter), and splice in a new section of tubing using brass unions and a pipe flaring kit though.

Good luck with it………

Cheers Mark,
The pipe is underneath the drivers floor pan, the one nearest the door. I think I will try and put in a piece. What size pipe do you need and where can I get it from?

Hi - Automec do fuel pipe and brass fittings. Not exactly sure of diameter (I've bought a new fuel line from them but it's round at my Mums so can't check !). They should be able to help you though. They have a website if you wanted to check them out

Cheers,

Mark.
