Replacement fuel lines

I have a 1982 MK1 golf gti. I have had it for 8 months and it has been superb until now. There is a leak from a fuel pipe as it has corroded through so it needs replacing. I have enquired about replacing it and have found that the part is now obsolete. I have contacted two garages who have told me slightly different things the first said that they would try to source the part but would probably need to get it custom made and the second said it could be repaired with some high pressure rubber hose. Can anyone give me a bit of guidance as I would like the job doing properly but dont want to spend money if it is not necessary. Cheers Ade

I think Automec do some suitable replacements, although you may have to do some bending and connection fitting yourself.

Maybe if we all hassle Rich (crazyquiff), he can get something together on this one  :wink: . I know he was talking about getting some fuel lines sorted out, and I for one think all my pipes need replacing sooner rather than later…….

G60RGE had done his recently and posted on here - with some flexi/braided stuff. However, if MK1 Turbo can make em up for ?42 then maybe this sounds ok as it will save a lot of hassle

Are you talking about the metal fuel line or the two flexi hoses at the back?

TurboMK1 has the flexi lines - I am also sourcing them.

Automec do a metal line which you bend to shape for about ?50 I think.

I am also sourcing a repair kit to replace the rear 2 or 300mm of the metal pipe with appropriate fittings to join the lines (only some wire wool and a standard pipe cutter will be required).

Looking for the metal lines but will probably be replacing flexi lines as well. Cheers for all the info everyone I checked out the old forum and there is a lengthy discussion on there about it. It could do with all pulling together seems it is getting more common. Gonna get it in the garage next week and have a good look with my mechanic. Will let you know how it goes. Ade

Look at the middle bottom of the "Home Page" for a link (or Article Archive - November 2004) to a little treatise that I wrote on replacing the metal pipes.  Mine rotted just over the rear axle beam (where its propped up gainst a piece of anti-rattle foam (read "sponge"!). There is a 100% chance that you will need new flex pipes (I was lucky enough to source the last(ish) of the originals) so take up the lad's offers for replacement of these.  If your pipe end fittings are fine (front ones will be!) you can get thick wall copper pipe from a hydraulics factor or go straight to Automec…don't use the thinner small bore heating pipes fron B&Q..they'll break in a short while in this particular environment (copper+vibration = work harden = brittle = fatigue = bl**dy great cracks in your pipes).

While your at it, derust, rustproof and paint your brackets…particular your fuel pump housing bracket…they are rarer than rocking horse "sh one t " to replace.

Hi Guys - just to confirm what Crazyquiff said earlier,  I have the MK1 fuel pump to accumulator hose in stock here - POA, replaces part number: 171 201 220D. The other hose I can supply is the small pig tail type hose again on the accumulator - POA (sorry can't rememebr the VAG number it replaces, but can look it up later if anyone needs it.). If anyone needs one pm me or email me at alecbthomson@hotmail.com.

Other items in the pipeline so to speak, will let you know what and when.

Oh, before I forget, headlining material, I now have a supplier sorted for this, and can normally beat Martrim pricing for this. Again if anyone is interested pm or email me.

I am nearly finished fitting the new fuel lines to my car. Thanks for all the advice has gone really smoothly so should be back on the road tomorrow afternoon. The part mk1 turbo supplied has been great and automec were a great help also. My advice to any one out there wanting to do this is use superworms guide it has been a great help to me. TurboTech..the pigly tail fuel pipe (accumulator to feed pipe is 171 201 218 C

The rubber Elbow pipe from tank to pump is 171 201 311 D ( I believe this is as rare as Rocking Horse Sh*te also but methinks a piece of the neoprene high press (not that it is - high press that is) fuel injection pipe from halfords will do the trick

I replaced my fuel lines October 04 and got the accumulator pipes from GSF. I got the flexi 'piggy pipe' and the one that went over the rear beam (I think). From the receipt the part numbers are 171-201-218C, ?26.77 and 171-201-220D, ?26.77 + VAT. I got the actual fuel lines from Automec and they fitted in nicely.
